Dan,
I would be too slow and, honestly, brave enough to tell your the truth. Also
like this it will be clearer to you. Forgive the error in English.
I also beg you, yes, I beg you to read all this.
I need to transmit this message to you because your life for all
eternity depends on this. It just does, and it does help do deny it or
just disagree with it. It was, is and will be the truth.
Now my friend I do care if you like me for saying this or not, but if
I am forgiven, saved and loved I can not act unlovely even though that might
cost me your disdain or indifference.
I first want to ask you something:
Do you think you are good person?
After you answer it.
Consider other question.
Have you ever lied? Even a little lie?
Have you ever stolen? Not even a littler and small thing just once?
Have you ever committed an adultery? Not even looking to a women with lust?
Well, if you are a human being like me you answered yes to all those questions.
And how do you call a person who tell lies? Liar isn’t it?
And someone who steals something? A thief, isn’t it?
And how about who commits adultery? An adulterous.

Daniel, my dear, as you have done all this thing you have not just broken any law, or just a moral
law. You broke the law of the Living God. All of them.
Look what God says:
Exodus 20
The Ten Commandments
1 And God spoke all these words:
 2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
 3 "You shall have no other gods before me.
 4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments.
 7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
  13 "You shall not murder.
 14 "You shall not commit adultery.
 15 "You shall not steal.
 16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
 17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

About lies: Proverbs 6 - There are six things the LORD hates,       seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes,       a lying tongue, […]
 What Jesus Christ saib about:
Murder 21"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.
 23"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.
 25"Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
Adultery 27"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' 28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

And this is the destiny (verse 8 specifically) of those (like you and me)who broke the law of the Almighty God:

Revelation 21

The New Jerusalem

1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4He will wipe every tear from their eyes There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
 5He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."

 6He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. 8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."

And there is no one just, righteous to justify himself before the Lord. No one.
It is like staying in front of the judge and saying: “Well, I recognize I have done bad things, but you know, I am human” or
“Well, I do not believe you Judge”.

The fact is that you will face Him, let me assure you that, and I might not fear now, but you will fear Him.

But Dan, there is hope. Not because your are good, just, not even because you deserve it, but because .... let me show in scripture:

Here is a passage centuries before Jesus Christ came, and it talked about him! Look:
Isaiah 53 (New King James Version)

Isaiah 53

1 Who has believed our report?
      And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
       2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
      And as a root out of dry ground.
      He has no form or comeliness;
      And when we see Him,
      There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
       3 He is despised and rejected by men,
      A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
      And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
      He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
       4 Surely He has borne our griefs
      And carried our sorrows;
      Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
      Smitten by God, and afflicted.
       5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
      He was bruised for our iniquities;
      The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
      And by His stripes we are healed.
       6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
      We have turned, every one, to his own way;
      And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
       7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
      Yet He opened not His mouth;
      He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
      And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
      So He opened not His mouth.
Look verses:
10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him;
      He has put Him to grief.
      When You make His soul an offering for sin,
      He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
      And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.
       11 He shall see the labor of His soul,and be satisfied
      By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
      For He shall bear their iniquities.
You know what this all about....man, this about God himself coming in flesh, that is, Jesus Christ
taking all you sins, my sins, all these things that are abomination to God, because he is holy and  just
and good, upon himself in that cross! Then God executed the punishment that is for you on His Holy and
Begotten Son.
He it is John 3:16 (New King James Version):
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not
perish but have everlasting life.

Now then Dear Dan...Repent, yes, repent of all your sins and believe in Jesus who paid the full price for your sins!

I still beg you to listen to 2 videos, they are both 20 minutes long. Here are the links.

I couldn’t have not told you the truth my dear friend.
Forgive me for not telling you this in person. I though this would be clearer and I also did have the courage, unfortunately.
Repent and Believe!
All the best,
Alex

Meeting him next week for coffee and this last one was way overboard. Any advices? Should I bring it up or just ignore it as a topic?

He'll bring up the topic, that's a given.

It's up to you.  Do you want to continue this friendship or not?

If you do, then you must decide if you want him trying to convert you all the time.

If you don't want him to convert you then you must set up boundaries and he must head them.

Thing is, he never does it in person, just through e-mails and he KNOWS how I feel about religion AND that I am atheist.

I would just ignore the emails then.  That's just what i would do until and if he brings it up in person.

I think it's rediculous.  He needs to STFU and let you live your life with your views.  He is a massive religous nut case.  He has probably lied, little lies even after his conversion, reawakening, rebirth whatever.  So he is a hypocrite and should be burned at the stake.  Ok seriously, I agree with Ozmo.  plus make sure he pays for the coffee, it's his christian duty.

My sympathies. I have a friend like that, so I know the stress it brings out having to control yourself from beating them to within an inch of their life. There's a program out there called mailwasher. Get it.

It allows you to bounce back any email to the sender, as if the edress to which they sent it was invalid.
I don't know if you've told your friend to stop sending you emails like that, but in the event that you have and they still won't stop, mailwasher is a great program. All their shit just bounces right back to them. It's also great for getting your name off spam lists as well. Spammers don't like bounces and will delete your name from their list as a result.

If that fails, take a bible, and beat him about the head & face with it, until his lips swell up too big for him to preach

True friends accept you for who you are, not who they want you to be.

My best male friend (jess) and i have never had a quarrel...we may not see each other for months at an end, for each one of us has a girlfriend and other obligations but when we do the transition is smooth and we just pick up where we left off. Both of us have had our share of bad habits but its never bothered the other. We just throw a few friendly cusses in the others direction and thats that.

Actually just bumped into him again. This time it was a pretty big discussion. I tried to explain to him that he is free to believe whatever he wants as long as he doesn't impose it on other people but he just ranted on and on about 'me not wanting to accept the truth'.  Pretty big disconnect.

I didn't read the whole email he sent you but I infer he is genuinely concerned about your eternal soul.

That being said, imo a lot of (most) people don't like to feel they are being "preached at" and it can, in fact, make them less accepting of learning/listening to spiritual information....resulting in stronger walls built up "against" the things of God.

Maybe if that's true for you tell your friend that and tell him you know he is available to answer any questions you may have but you'd like to be the one to bring them up, if ever.

It's rare in real life that I engage in discussion like I do here on these boards. I never think about religion or 'god' in real life. So it's strange having to deal with this in real life. I don't like being preached at but in my case it is a total waste of energy. I will never believe in any sort of religion or deity. I see no evidence for it. In particular I see zero evidence that the claims of Christianity are true and I told him that. But he is a fundamentalist so...if he wants to convert someone he'd have better luck with a rabbit than with me. I am an atheist and will always be one until real evidence convinces me otherwise.

ask him if he believes that God is protecting him and will allow no harm to befall him.  Then kick his ass and ask him again!  Just kidding. I beleive that religion is private and shouldn't be preached at to people.  If someone is curious then yes explain your stance but don't preach it.

Maybe tell him that you are apprised of the gospel message and that no human being giving you more info will help to "convert" you because you are just not open to considering what they have to say on the matter.

Since you pretty much dismiss fundamentalists regarding their beliefs, why don't you ask God directly to show you if He is real?  Maybe try sincerely asking Him.  You may feel ridiculous at first because you 99% believe you'd be talking to no one but why not try it?  Some people won't do this because they really don't want God to be real.  Don't be afraid though...it could have interesting results! :D

Also, if you do this, you could tell your friend that you are doing it and that it's up to God (and you) if you are going to believe and that you appreciate his concern but you are going straight to the top so to speak so he need not worry about you or bring it up to you further.
