GROVE CITY, Pa. - A student who appeared in pornographic videos using a pseudonym is appealing his suspension from a Christian college in western Pennsylvania, saying that the off-campus job wasn't the business of school officials.

John Gechter, 22, of Philadelphia said that he needed the income from his roles in gay porn to pay for school, but was suspended for a year from Grove City College, pending his appeal, after a student saw him in a video posted online.

"I absolutely believe this college violated my rights," Gechter told The Allied News of Grove City. "They [suspended] me based on my occupation. I was not doing anything illegal."

College spokeswoman Amy Clingensmith said that Gechter was suspended because he "exhibited behavior contrary to the values" of the college.

"He also indicated he chose to participate in this behavior knowing it was incongruent with the policies, mission and values of Grove City College," Clingensmith said.

Gechter told the newspaper that he has been in about 15 gay porn scenes in the last two years using the screen name "Vincent DeSalvo." In doing the work, he said, he flew to Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and other places on the weekends.

Gechter, a senior majoring in molecular biology, said that he started doing gay porn after he was referred to the industry through a modeling agency late in his sophomore year.

Another student recognized Gechter and copied and pasted some images of him in an e-mail that was sent to some friends April 23. By the next morning, most of the student body and the school admininstration had seen or knew about the e-mail, Gechter said.

Gechter contacted the American Civil Liberties Union and the Pittsburgh Delta Foundation, a gay advocacy group. Delta's president, Gary Van Horn Jr., sent a letter to the school saying that Gechter's gay-porn work doesn't affect the school because he acted under a pseudonym.

Gechter said that he hasn't attended classes in two weeks since appealing the suspension, saying that he's afraid of reprisals from students.

But Clingensmith said that Gechter has been seen eating in the cafeteria and working out in the gym among other students.

They may be a private religious institution with the right to set forth rules and regulations, ...however their rules and regulations must be accountable to the laws of the land. If his civil rights were violated, they are wrong. Your argument is a weak, feeble and impotent one. It's the equivalent of saying that a private muslim school in America has the right to perform honour killings against female students.

Or cheating, disrupting the classroom, disrespecting professors, failing to maintain the required g.p.a., violating the student code of conduct, violating school policy, etc. 

This kid had the "right" to pay his tuition and receive his education, assuming he followed the rules.  No one has the "right" to attend a private college or university.

I've been with the same woman for almost 7 years.  She's divorced and has no interest in getting married again and we both own our homes and have other assets, etc... If I tell you I'm not gay and you keep saying that I am then you are using it as an insult which just exposes your bigotry......something we all know about you already.

well I wouldn't go that far but it works for our situation.  If I were younger or our situation was different (i.e. she didn't have her own place or kids) we might make a different choice.  I'm very glad I didn't get married at a young age.  Almost everyone I know who got married in their twenties is either miserable or divorced.

a more interesting question is why bum keeps posting the majority of gay related stories on this site.  He clearly spends some time every day looking for them or if nothing else keeps an eye out for them.

There's no rule saying a particular group owns a word and can dictate it only gets used in one specific manner/context. Those stupid commercials are proof that political correctness has gone too far. I use 'gay' all the time and will continue doing so.

They certainly seem to have the law on their side and this case is a world apart of the two teenaged girls at that Lutheran High School who were merely suspected of being gay.  I wonder why this guy couldn't get a regular job (or two) like most of us did in college.
