When your out of town at an expo or competing, there usually arent many other options.. but yea.. hotel rooms, hallways= tacky.. I agree. Very seldom does it look tasteful or artistic.. but some can pull it off.

In physique photography, its all about the angles & use of lighting...shouldnt have much to do with location. Someday if I get the time and $$, I will try my hand at it.

Maybe using/creating a plain background is the solution. I used to go to a photography class with my woman, and they just draped the background with what looked like a big off-white tablecloth on "portrait" day.

Thats an idea..or black...make it like a studio. I guess it all depends on what the subject is. You can create some very dramatic effects with light and shadows, or a single light source (like light coming in through a window) that will drown out most background issues. I think our own Tre has done some fine examples of this.
