MYFOXNY.COM - This week, thousands of people are getting stimulus checks in the mail. The problem is that a lot of them are dead. Antoniette Santopadre of Valley Stream was expecting a $250 stimulus check. But when her son finally opened it, they saw that the check was made out to her father, Romolo Romonini, who died in Italy 34 years ago. He'd been a U.S. citizen when he left for Italy in 1933, but only returned to the United Stated for a seven-month visit in 1969.

The Santopadres are not alone. The Social Security Administration, which sent out 52 million checks, says that some of those checks mistakenly went to dead people because the agency had no record of their death. That amounts to between 8,000 and 10,000 checks for millions of dollars.

The feds blame a rushed schedule, because all the checks have to be cut by June. The strange this is, some of the checks were made out to people -- like Romonini -- who were never even part of the Social Security system.

it would be foolish to look at the plan - 2 months into an 18-month growth package - and determine it to be a failure.  You wouldn't watch the first 5 minutes of a football game and declare the 7-3 leader to be the winner, right?

I keep seeing it on getbig... "biggest failure in history" etc.   Really, stop being such little drama queens.  it took clinton's 1993 stim package a year to work, and when it did, the economy boomed.  I'd say we wait the 18 months, see how the new jobs spurn spending, then evaluate it.

i hate the stim bill, but i recognize without it, we'd currently be without half our banks, half our pensions, and the big 3 automakers.  And guess what.  The repubs would STILL be bitching.   Obama knew the right was going to piss and moan if he let the economy collapse (as was overdue) and they were going to piss and moan if he borrowed/printed a shitload of money to prevent it.  So, with the exact same outcome from the right (whining), he chose the one that at least keeps us afloat for a bit.


tony, i think you don't really understand what would happen if AIG, CITI and friends failed.  our country would be ruined with no chance of recovery, because nobody would be lending and we'd risk having our interests grabbed up all over the world. 

Sure, it's the "right" thing to do.  But I think most folks would rather borrow $10 grand from their grandmother when they hit a bad spell, than lose their house and car, just to be "right".

Big deal, so they wrote a few cheques to some dead guys, ...what's the damage anyway?
Maybe a few cents for paper, postage, and an envelope? ...it's not like all the dead people can cash them.
Maybe in the case of those who have similar or the same names like a dead John Doe who has a son also named John.

And then what is John Doe going to do with the extra $250? ...spend it?
So what are you bitching about? When he spends it, ...it stimulates the economy, ...mission accomplished.

You just don't want John Doe to have any money to pay off any of his bills.
You want him insolvent. You need delinquent accounts or you're out of business.

...or do you think that perhaps Obama has made so few mistakes, that this oft repeated scenario is considered newsworthy. I can see where such news would have taken a back seat in a Bush admin, ...Lord knows there was a ton of mistakes, lies, secrets, and so many controversies and evil shananigans that a poorly pruned list wouldn't have warranted any attention.

Worst case scenario, the Obama admin sent out 10,000 cheques to dead Americans totalling $2,500,000.

$4 a gallon gas is a pipe dream that you'll be wishing for once all is said and done!

It wasn't $4 a gallon gas that stopped the economy, ...it was the economy stopping $4 gallon gas.
It was the Wall Street house of cards that came crashing down that stemmed the demand for fuel,
triggering the short sales needed to cover losses. Look to Wall street and their 3 card monty players.
Gas needs to go up even further, ...and it will. It was a difficult adjustment, for some, but they've become used to it. It's going to go up further, ...and people will get used to that, ...and it will continue to go up incrementally, ...and people will adjust incrementally. bUt make no mistake, ...it's going up.
