Are those DBs cast in a single piece?

Some of the old cannonball/globe dumbbell were, but mostly they are cast around a separate bar. York later moved to a flared bar that was casted around with some models to help correct the looseness that some of the other types developed.

Nope, I just have an interest in metalwork, so I tend to pay attention to those little things. York also offered a display board to dealers that took you through the casting steps:).

Ya some look like they were separate pieces or maybe repaired but others look like a solid piece.  Hard to tell.  Thanks for the info.  This vintage stuff is pretty cool.  It would be nice to work with stuff that had served so many so well over the years.  If I put together a dream gym it would be a mix of new and antique gear.

dude, i just said they were the worse piece of exercise equipment ever but if you really want a pair go on ironhistory.com there's a guy on there named james chaplic, he bought out a whole sporting goods store worth of york equipment and he's selling it off. i don't know how many pair he has left. i got a pair but really don't want to sell as i keep them around as a collectors item.
