A builder told me about Frank Lloyd Wright:
- His rooves tended to be leakey
- He used wood framing on his cantilevers when he should have used steel, so they would start to sag after a couple of years
- You would pay Frank Lloyd Wright's fees while his underlings did most of the actual design work
- He was a terrible boss
He was also allegedly a bit of a "charmer" when soliciting potential clients.
There's a story that Wright was at the Kaufmann's home
(where they lived prior to FW) and was engaged in a discussion with Kaufmann's son. At one point, Wright deliberately mentioned to the son - loud enough for the father to hear - "This home is not worthy of your parents."
Supposedly, the Kaufmann's contracted him soon thereafter to survey some wooded property they owned on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, and design blueprints for what would become their new house built over top of the small waterfalls that coursed through the land.
