Sanctions (trade etc.) haven't worked so the options are pretty narrow.

Maybe best to let them fuck around, I can't seriously see them going on the offensive - having said that they are a country base on nutjobbery...

NKorea Threatens Military Strike, Abandons 1953 Armistice With South...

May 27 (Bloomberg) -- North Korea threatened a military response to South Korean participation in a U.S.-led program to seize weapons of mass destruction, and said it will no longer abide by the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War.

“The Korean People’s Army will not be bound to the Armistice Agreement any longer,” the official Korean Central News Agency said in a statement today. Any attempt to inspect North Korean vessels will be countered with “prompt and strong military strikes.” South Korea’s military said it will “deal sternly with any provocation” from the North.

South Korean President Lee Myung Bak ordered his government to take “calm” measures on the threats, his office said in a statement today. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, Takeo Kawamura, echoed those remarks and called on North Korea to “refrain from taking actions that would elevate tensions in Asia.”

The threats are the strongest since North Korea tested a nuclear weapon on May 25, drawing international condemnation and the prospect of increased sanctions against the communist nation. South Korea dispatched a warship to its maritime border and is prepared to deploy aircraft, Yonhap News reported, citing military officials it didn’t identify.

“This rapid-fire provocation indicates a more aggressive shift in the Kim Jong Il regime,” said Ryoo Kihl Jae, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul. “Kim is obviously using a strategy of maximum force.”

This is saber rattling.  NK  is not gearing up for war.  They couldn't sustain war 5 min.  Besides that, they aren't going to do jack crap but spout off unless China gives them support.

65 days.....from the start of the US NEO to evac all US and foreign Nats from the Pen...until US forces encircle Pyongyang. We fully expect em to use chemical weapons. I figure if we launch cheesburgers at em, they'll be to busy to fight.

They got enough fight in them to encircle and bypass Seoul and then sue for peace under favorable terms. It's gonna take us atleast 30 days to get our shit together.

Even the hawks say there’s not much America can do, in response to North Korea’s nuclear test. But that doesn’t mean the U.S. military isn’t prepping for a war with the Kim Jong-Il regime, just in case.

In March, American and South Korean forces teamed up for the “Key Resolve/Foal Eagle” war game. 13,100 troops from outside Korea — and tens of thousands more, already stationed in the country — participated in the massive exercise, which focused on “deploying troops and equipment to Korea in the event of an attack,” according to a military press release.

Some U.S. and South Korean commandos made airborne jumps together from a helium blimp; others, from helicopters hovering above the Korea Strait. A third group ran a mock “operation to secure a suspected chemical weapons lab.” Unconventional weapons experts drilled in responding to a simulated strike involving “hundreds of WMD.” Navy helicopter pilots swept for mines, while Marine fighter pilots flew with their South Korean counterparts to “wipe out” simulated enemy aircraft.

The Americans and their allies kicked all kinds of butt in the exercise, of course. Other war games, testing out the North Korean scenario, didn’t end quite as cleanly. One ran by The Atlantic in 2005 forecast 100,000 or more dead civilians in the first few days. And that was if the U.S. could assemble the half-million to million troops needed for such an assault; none of the participants thought such a staggering number of troops could be gathered together, given all of America’s military commitments around the world.

Two years earlier, the Pentagon put together a very different kind of war plan for North Korea — one that didn’t involve ground troops at all. Instead, U.S. forces would lob bombs and missiles and electronic attacks in an instant “global strike.” Even nuclear weapons were considered, as part of the plan.

A similar “bolt from the blue” was proposed in a 2005 article for the Washington Post, by former Defense Secretary William Perry and Ashton Carter, who today serves as the Pentagon’s weapons-buyer-in-chief. They proposed taking out a North Korean long-range missile on the launchpad, to prevent the nuclear Kim Jong-Il from test-firing an ICBM. The surgical strike was, of course, never ordered. And the missile itself was kind of a dud.

In 2003, retired Colonel John Collins ran through the possible moves and countermoves in a military standoff on the Korean peninsula — from blockades to full-out nuclear strikes.  His conclusion: “Any of the U.S. options described above could trigger uncontrollable escalation that would create appalling casualties on both sides of the DMZ and promise a Pyrrhic victory at best. Unilateral actions by the United States without unqualified ROK [Republic of Korea] agreement and willing participation every step of the way would be immoral as well as ill- advised. Inaction while Kim Jong Il develops a robust nuclear arsenal and perhaps supplies nuclear weapons to U.S. enemies, unfortunately, would worsen any future confrontation.”

In my opinion, NK will never launch an attack.....they just try to bluff like they would.....they won't do it for the folowing reasons:

1. they are broke....they wouldn't be able to pay their troops or sustain a war for very long

2. they have no idea whether their troops will fight or not..they might give up in mass and defect or they may turn their guns on their commanders and fight for the south and U.S.

3. the U.S. would fight back with MASSIVE retaliation..we would wipe out the entire country with cruise missiles, predator drones, and missiles fired from submarines and battleships

4. the chinese won't intervene as long as the U.S. doesn't try to occupy korea with troops on their border.

5. Kim Jong IL only cares about survival and staying in power..he wants to maintain a legacy he can pass on to his sons...war with the U.S. would wipe out the country and would destroy his father's legacy and he would eventually be killed by U.S., his own people (like Saddham was) or captured and placed on trial for crimes against humanity for the suffering he inflicted on his people..no country would give him asylum (well..maybe china)

Some of what u say isn't true...

1...Irrelavent....The NKPA are the only ones who are reliable politically and otherwise. They're the only ones who get fed and paid...fed being the key.

2. The NKPA are highly motivated and will fight...this is an asian army raised in a communist cradle to grave society. These aren't arabs.

3. Yup

4. We believe the Chinese will invade to create a buffer for all the refugee's streaming north...

5. Kim may be on his way out..his son is very close to the military.

6. China wants no part of this guy..if this happens they hope it will happen quickly and that he ends up dead.

good point....they may commit suicide if they become really desperate and Kim realizes that he nor his sons can maintain power ....and try to take South Korea with them...Kim is jealous of SK and believes they are actively helping the western world in plotting against him....no way would he leave them standing intact if he is being driven from power

NK doesn't even have enough fuel to power its war machine for very long anyways and add the fact that their Air Force is in awful shape with pilots who barely get any air time and NK wouldn't last very long. They have numbers and the ability to rain down missiles and shells down upon Seoul. That's about it.

And lets not forget the US still has naval, air and ground assets in-theater. Plus the SK military is well-equipped, well trained and technologically advanced.

In the end, what would the outcome be between  5,000 NK outdated tanks rolling across the DMZ versus 2 nations worth of precision guided munitions and 2 nations that completely control the air over the battle space?
