Yes but.....nK doesn't have to take the country...just push past Seoul. We don't have alot of ground troops in Area 1 which is north od Seoul and controled by 2nd ID. The nK's will use chemical weapons to deny access of movement into and out of that area. The refugee's streaming out of that area will be enormous. We're gonna loose most of 2ID...the first 10 dyas will be very bloody. The US reserves the right to use tactical nukes in response to chem strikes. Thats not likely but on the table. Be prepared for pictures of alot of dead GI's in the beginning. Then it becomes a test of wills. Obama has to make sure that once we get momentum and push them back across the "Z" that we finish. 5000 outdated tanks will eventually destroy the 2 Battalions of M1's we have there. Plus Korea is horrible tank country, horrible.

Good assessment. The US used to have most of the 1st M.E.F up at the "Z" but the moved farther south to staging areas some time ago. There are a 1,000+ rockets, missiles and artillery guns aimed at Seoul at any given time, do you think NK just pushes past Seoul without turning it into ruble first? NK will go for maximum shock effect with WMDs, as you said, but they simply don't have the fuel or air power to sustain it. Most of the losses will come in the initial thrust and hold. The M1s (A1's or A2's?) will be good for a VERY high kill ratio and of course those 5,000 tanks will come up against a very heavy AT net.

But yes, lots of dead civilians, SK military and GI's in the initial days. But once the advance is blunted and the counter attack begins, the NK forces won't have the material/fuel to sustain themselves much longer.

is japan itchy to attack NK?   I'd say let them attack NKorea.  Let Israel attack Iran.

We can sit back and watch the action wihtout spending $ and lives, for a change.

theres gonna be alot said in this thread but nothing will be a better answer than this

Israel does want to attack Iran, that's for sure.

Japan probably won't do anything unless directly attacked and even then they have marginal military forces with no combat experience save for a ho-hum deployment by there "Homeland Def. Force" a few years ago.

I don't know what the U.S. military has planned in the event of an attack..but I think they know that Seoul is toast and that our troops there will sustain heavy losses in terms of life....they are simply there as a tripwire to ensure that the U.S. will respond.....their lives are actually being sacrificed since the NK army will quickly overrun SK in the first days of the war....

again..I think the U.S. plan would be to strike NK with everything including the kitchen sink....cut off their troops and the ability to supply them then destroy all troops on SK soil...but I truly suspect that the NK army will begin to defect once they are in SK...it would be hard for them to resist doing so....there wont be anything left in NK to go back to because the U.S. will destroy the entire country....

the U.S. will make sure there isn't a pot left to piss in.....We will attempt to discover Kim's hiding places and destroy them like we tried with Saddham..and china will do nothing..they don't want war with the U.S.,,unless the U.S. tried to occupy NK which we won't siunce there is no practical advantage in doing so

also the U.S. will use nukes if NK uses chemical weapons or nukes

I've been two sKorea 4 times in the last 8 months as part of the evaluation team for 8th US Army and 2 ID. I have a pretty good idea of our plan, and what the North plans to do or our best guess at it. I'll try and answer both threads from andres and Gigx. We have A1's. We're not concerned with Kim winning, its how much damage he'll cause. We think we can encircle Pyongyang in about 65 days of sustained combat...thats from the day we begin to evac. The plan calls for us to do that earlier then hostilities. We should be able to see the NKPA begin to move to their final battle positions. We won't reinforce from the states prior to that, so as not to provoke an attack. The big problam is the NEO or evak. It will take a ton of resources to get folks down south and then to Japan. If the north chems the collection points or ports, we have a big problem. The marines might be forced to conduct an amphibious landing. We also think they will bypass Seoul so as not to get bogged down, and keep it intact. It will get hit, but not as bad as house to house. Our problem will be is that kim will get south of Seoul and then request a cease fire from the UN.

Now if he does get further south with the initial suicide thrust, does the UN accept the cease-fire? It would be the US and ROK's fighting and dying. One would have to ask these questions, and the answers in the UN's case would be "Russia" and "China". But maybe not, I would hope the UN would condemn the attack or endlessly debate it, which is all they are good for, and stay out of it.

Or maybe the UN would intervene diplomatically because of the humanitarian/refugee crisis that would ensue.

Hmmmm... I'm starting to notice a pattern here. Everytime HH6 goes somewhere, ...tensions follow.
HH6, ...are you being paid to stir up alot of shit? C'mon, ...you can tell us, ...you're among friends.  :D

btw - Did any of you catch wind of the recent arrest by Iraqi's? Seems they caught a suspected terrorist accused of blowing alot of stuff up in Iraq, ...and do you know what he said? ...he claimed to be on the US payroll.  :o

Note: The very rule that we are all up in arms about is something the US and other nuke-owning, white-run, countries have been doing all along since all this non-proliferation mumbo-jumbo has been put into effect.

The only difference now is that Kim Jong-il is a little brown-skinned man.

And what I am trying to say with the above is not that we're all racist SOBs, what I am saying is that Kim Jong-Il is yet ANOTHER "leader" just acting like a democrat.

Let's face it, the problem is that there are too many chiefs and too few indians.

Let's do away, here and abroad mind you, with these egotistical, Moses-wannabees, compulsive socialites and replace them with representatives of The People, not just a few, but ALL.

Exactly.

I've always wandered how ANY country can spend almost 520 BILLION dollars in weapons and personnel and STILL claim they're "spreading democracy". I mean you add up the military expenses of the next 10 countries on the list and it STILL doesn't even come close to what we spend.

I guess freedom-spreading is an expensive business.

Thats the question....depends on what we're seeing on TV. I think once US forces gain momentum, things are over for the nKoreans and we won't stop....it depends on how quickly the US can begin to conduct offensive combat operations. China will immediatly invade to create a buffer zone.

So would US and Chinese troops meet up somewhere around Choson and shake hands a la 1945?

They'd create another DMZ. China doesn't want US troops on her border and they don't want all these nKoreans so we think they'll invade and set up camps on the nK side.

S.Korea doesn't want reunification because it knows it would be devastating to its economy but also doesn't like the American military occupation, kind of a lose/lose situation. But since we WILL go broke and won't be able to afford to garrison the place, they will have to deal with it eventually.

I have friends from England and when our drunken discussions got into politics and such they usually made a point to say how delighted the rest of Europe was with "reunification" because it would take some of the piss out of the Germany.
