European history from the end of Rome to the Renaissance is kind of boring for me. Pope this, pope that. How much history of the church can one atheist take? I think I've heard the DC referred to as best defining the medieval world view (Great Chain of Being, etc) but I think I also heard it is viewed by some as a harbinger of the renaissance. Maybe because he's hanging with Virgil? Maybe because actions in life determine the afterlife, not just the station one was born into? I don't know.
