Quote of the Day: Cain Velasquez Talks 'Brown Pride' Tattoo
« Reply #1 on: June 09, 2009, 06:49:01 AM »
I got my tattoo because I wanted people to know I was Mexican and that I was doing good things with my life. I'm really proud of what I went through to get where I am. Growing up, there wasn't anyone in the media [who was of Mexican decent] who I could look up to. There wasn't anyone who looked like me [in the media], so I never thought I would do something good. I figured I would just go out and join the regular work force. I never thought I'd make a career out of wrestling or fighting. I just wanted everyone to say I was just like them and that I was good at what I did.

Cain Velasquez talks to UFC.com.

I hate to sound like a fanboy but I get them all. Usually there's at least a fight or two that gives me enough intrigue, plus I get them for half off as I work for my cable provider. Friends always pool together and pay for it anyway. I would never order a PPV alone, nor pay full price.

The Wandy/Franklin fight should be cool. And Cain looks pretty ruthless. I wonder how he'll fare in the 2nd and 3rd round though, we haven't seen him dragged to the deep end. Maybe Kongo will just knee his balls up into his throat like he did Cro Cop though... hmmmm

sounds cool to me, i got to learn your system big L, ;), i usually get on youtube and try to watch the fights an hour or 2 after the ufc is over. before i got married and had my son i used to order all of them also, and id go live when the ufc came to jersey or connecticut cause it was just a few hour drive and you could get really good seats for 75$. this was back in 99 and 2000 though

UFC Heavyweight fighter Cain Velasquez's road to the relevance has been somewhat of a rare feat in today's MMA landscape. In only his third professional MMA bout, Velasquez was thrust into the UFC spotlight against a formidable opponent in Brad Morris at UFC 83. It took Velasquez only 2:10 to prove that the tremendous hype surrounding him wasn't unwarranted. Two more wins later, Velasquez will now be looking to break into the upper-echelon of the UFC's Heavyweight division at UFC 99.

It won't be an easy task however. Originally matched up against the former PRIDE veteran Heath Herring, Cain will now have a tougher task in trying to squeeze punches through the massive reach of French Muay Thai striker Cheick Kongo. Kongo is currently riding a three-fight win streak with wins over Dan Evensen, Mostapha Al Turk, and Antoni Hardonk.

There are many questions that will be answered when these two meet in Cologne, Germany on Saturday. Most importantly, is Cain Velasquez ready for the upper-echelon of the division? Has Kongo's takedown defense and ground tactics improved? Will the UFC grant Kongo a title shot if he manages to beat Cain? It's definitely a much more interesting matchup with the prospect that Kongo's name has come up in title talk, but a Velasquez win would crush those hopes and send Kongo back down the ladder.

One thing is for certain, this matchup is crucial to the makeup of the division toward the top. Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar at UFC 100 and Randy Couture vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 102 will help decide the future matchups at the top. Shane Carwin is currently nursing his injuries while Junior Dos Santos is rumored to potentially be fighting Justin McCully at UFC 102. If Mirko "CroCop" Filipovic puts together any type of run in his next few fights in the UFC, he'll likely get a shot before a lot of the lower-ranking guys, but he'll have to go through Kongo, Gonzaga, Carwin, or Santos, all very tough matchups for an older, less dangerous Mirko.

I imagine that the UFC will push Kongo toward the top quickly if he defeats Velasquez while a Velasquez win would only set him up for an even tougher fight in order to continue exposing the kid to the UFC's fanbase. Kongo has more than enough fights in the Octagon and on PPV cards to be recognized by fans, and he's managed to string together some impressive finishes to boot. If Mir loses to Lesnar, we won't be seeing Mir vs. Kongo and likely won't see a quick turnaround by Nogueira or Couture to fight Lesnar. That leaves Kongo available for a late fall showdown with Lesnar.

In any case, it's apparent that this showdown at UFC 99 will make or break both of these guys. Kongo has a chance to gain title contention while Velasquez has the potential to begin taking on the competition that will get  him into that title contention role. A loss for either fighter will hurt their chances tremendously as they are currently on the outside looking in. I'm doubtful that simply being on the "outside" is hardly where the UFC will want either of these guys in a somewhat shallow division. Pick your horse, fans!

UFC 99: Mike Swick Looking for Impressive Win, Seeks "Big Fight"
« Reply #14 on: June 10, 2009, 05:25:30 AM »
Mike Swick (13-2) vs. Ben Saunders (7-0-2) could easily be considered one of the best matchups at UFC 99. The welterweight tilt will pit two Ultimate Fighter alums in what could be deemed a situation in which Swick has much to lose while Saunders could gain considerable momentum in the divisional picture. Saunders will see a substantial step up in competition against Swick after defeating Dan Barrera, Ryan Thomas, and Brandon Wolff while Swick rides a three-fight win streak with wins Josh Burkman, Marcus Davis, and Jonathan Goulet.

One of the most talked about aspects to the outcome of this matchup is Swick's potential to become a contender within the division. Swick stated to MMAMania.com's Derek Bolender that an impressive win in this matchup should put him on the fast track to a "big fight" or title shot:

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com ): Do you think an impressive performance over Saunders gets you a title shot? Do you feel like you would deserve one at that point?

Mike Swick: I really do hope if I have an impressive performance I get a big fight. I definitely hope that. I’ve worked really hard. Like I said I’ve had a couple bad fights. I feel like I’ve made up for it and shown people there’s a reason for that. You can look at my record and see, both amateur and pro, have all been exciting.

A win over Saunders would put me at 9 - 1 in the UFC, which I think is a good record. I think I would definitely be entitled to a big fight. If they give me a title fight I would love it. Obviously that would be the best outcome, but if not, just a big fight would be great. Something where I have a lot to gain out of the fight versus a lot to lose.

Many fans ripped on Swick after he made some comments regarding contention after his win over Jonathan Goulet. While those comments were rather "confident" in his performance, Swick seems to have taken a turn to a more realistic point of view. I think most fans would agree that Swick deserves a substantial step up in competition with an impressive victory over Ben Saunders on Saturday night, but is title contention a good idea?

It's interesting that contention talk continues to revolve around Swick's name. His record in the welterweight division doesn't hold any huge wins over top 5 competition within the division. His win over Marcus Davis is probably his most recognizable victory within the division, but it's unlikely that the UFC was impressed by the UFC 85 performance. Swick has stated, however, that the UFC could match him up against teammates Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch at any moment, and they do realize that those fights will need to happen down the road with three camp members battling it out for the top spot.

The big problem, however, is that Fitch has already lost to Georges St. Pierre as has Josh Koscheck. If Thiago Alves loses to GSP at UFC 100, an impressive performance could vault Swick toward the top simply to mix up the competition that GSP is defending his title against.

For now, Swick will need to focus on a very game opponent in Ben Saunders. The American Top Team member has a significant height and reach advantage coupled with brutalizing Muay Thai and solid ground skills. He's also become increasingly bigger in size from how he looked on the reality series, proving that ATT knows how to bring these athletes to the next level.

Saunders has stated that he doesn't believe Swick's speed will be a factor due to his reach advantage, but Swick has been quick to point out that past opponents have said the exact same thing in interviews. Reach will definitely be Saunders' friend in this one, but Swick's speed could be the deciding factor. If Saunders can manage to use his reach to pepper Swick without being countered, he may be able to take advantage of potentially hurting Swick or trying to bulldoze him into a clinch along the fence. If that happens, Swick could be in for a rough night. It's one of those intriguing matchups due to Saunders' potential vs. Swick's speed and abilities at the lower weight class. I hope you're looking forward to it as much as I am.

I thnk is Kongo wins this, he should get a title shot or at least a huge name, like randy or nog, THEN a title shot if successful.  He's had a few nice fights.. and i think is deserving.

Oh I disagree.  I think this is a pretty decent card of fights.  I prefer the cards with four or five interesting matchups as opposed to one big fight and bunch of crap beneath it.

I think Franklin/Wandy will be a good fight and fun to watch, I am looking forward to cro cop coming back, I think Marcus Davis VS Dan Hardy could be a good brawl, Kongo VS Velasquez will be real interesting to see if Cain is ready for primetime or not and I always like watching Spencer Fischer fight, he is a brawler who lays it out there.

I actually think its gonna be a pretty good card.

i normally go to a bar near me and spend maybe $25.  Some beer, some wings and the fight for less than the PPV purchase price.

This fight is Mike's for the taking, if he uses his handspeed and superior footwork he will avoid Ben's clinch which is basically the only area he poses a threat to Swick.  Then again it's hard to guage because Ben hasn't really fought anybody of note yet (including that last guy he mauled), although we got to see his lack of wrestling skills on TUF when Tommy Speer continually took him down at will and held him down for a decisive win.  I'm saying Swick by footwork.

I'm gonna order it. I don't know, it seems like a pretty good card to me. Every fight on the main card should be pretty good:

Wanderlei v Franklin- Should be a good scrap. Always look forward to Wand fighting.
Kongo v Velasquez - Two up and coming heavyweights both looking to get into the title mix
Davis v Hardy - Should be a stand up war. Loads of shit talking over the past few months; we'll see who can back it up.
Swick v Saunders - Should be another good stand up fight between two rangy kickboxers. Saunders is underrated imo.
Fisher v Uno - Has potential to be a great MMA match showcasing all aspects of the game.
Cro Cop v Al Turk - Worth watching just to see if Mirko has anything left.

Just my two cents...
