Is anyone a Mike Mentzer Fan?
« on: May 31, 2009, 04:28:25 AM »
Just wondering how many Mike Mentzer fan are left out there? I think he was a great Bodybuilder and Trainer in his time. He went against the establishment and tried to make BB a science. Totally changed my view on Bodybuilding and Training, I trained with him in Venice in the 90's, he had alot of balls to say what he thought was right when everyone else was doing something else.

Isn't that a prerequisite to be a professional bodybuilder?

Sev good response. He went a little crazy after the 1980 O. I think he put some much into only to have Arnold to win again, however after the crazy years he regained his former mentality. Sad to see a great mind die so young his brother as well they brought alot of knowledge to BB. Dorian changed his ways after training with Mike.

Unless your Bob Chic,a law abiding policeman, where your doctor prescribes you with every bodybuilding drug known to man in mass quantities because he is a super doctor and rules dont apply to him.

Definitely.

I had the chance to talk to mentzer just prior to his passing several times on the telephone.

I was pretty young and a friend of mine was into HIT. I just emailed him on a whim and left him my number.

He called me a couple of days later and we talked for over 2 hours. He explained the basic concepts of HIT and
why he felt it would for me, given my schedule and everything.

I read both of his books (I think there is a third now) and they are quite interesting. I did try HIT ( the Mentzer way) for
about 3 months, with some success
I still do not feel that the level of intensity required is achievable by a "regular person" just looking to
workout/look good. The lack of warm up sets is also problematic and leads to injuries IMO.

Anyways, it was clear in our conversations that he was a very intelligent, thoughtful and interesting man later in his life.
He was a great bb, no question.

Exactly my experience with him as well. He was very brave going against the BB establishment probably cost him the Mr O :)

All drugs and fooled everyone by his HIT. Several people that use to train at golds back in the 70s say he never did true HIT.

Awesome physique. An inspiration to 1000's. A true legend of the bodybuilding world.

His life outside of bodybuilding... I don't give a fuck. I never tried to duplicate his morals, only his arms.

A drug addled idiotic also ran who preached that stupid HIT bullshit so dogmatically he'd have a kitten if certain trainers went to the gym more than twice a week.

What's not to be a fan of?

Mentzer fully admited that during his bbing heyday that he did an average to 6-8 sets per bodypart, (which was still a lot less then anyone else at the time.) He didnt really push H.I.T. untill he was well retired.

He was batshit crazy during the 90s, this much I can vouch for, but he was also one of thre more intelligent people in bodybuilding history. His problem I think was latching onto Objectivism.....it helped spawn, and justify, his incredibly dogmatic outlook.

For what its worth though we probably need more people like him....with all of his faults he was a very honest man, and unique in a cesspool of clones, and shallow kids.

Excellent, yes 6-8 per bodypart in his contest days but later I think he discovered that was too much...brillant person that had a bad ending.

Was one of the most HONEST bodybuilders out there. He stated his arms were 18 5/8" at their LARGEST (5'8" and 225 pounds). He was extremely articulate and intelligent. Probably way to philosophical for most to stomach. When he spoke, I listened. When he trained, I watched.

I think the whole one-set-to-failure thing is dejecta, but I admire him just for standing up to Arnold at the '80 Olympia the way he did.

Huge fan of his training regimen, if i have time to eat and train that is.
I think HIT training is most effective for all bodygroups except triceps, forearms and quads. As the years passed by im training shorter and shorter per session. Right now i dont stay longer than 30 min in the gym, you put everything you got in those 30 min and you re beat man. I keep the warmup-sets on low reps, and very little rest between those warmupsets, like 10 to 15 seconds, then rest 2 min and do your one monster intensity set for lets say dumbell curls, right now im doing just one set and one excersize for biceps, if i have the time i do it twice weekly, and they grow faster than ever before.its awesome i say
