Guys that WWE/F missed the boat on
« on: June 01, 2009, 10:41:48 AM »
The main one that comes to mind for me is Bam Bam Bigelow. He put on great matches and was incredibly agile for a guy his size. He always was stuck in crappy angles with Doink, LT, etc.. He had a different look and i think he would have made a great IC champ possibly even a transitional WWF champion.

Bam Bam was used poorly in both his runs. Again, not a Vince creation so therefore not pushed properly. He was huge in the original ECW and also in Japan.

Another wrestler who fits this bill Mass is none other than Vader.

Yes, i was debating him or Bam Bam. I love Bam Bam's Japan work. Barry Windham as "The Stalker" was an insult to his NWA stuf.

Was it "The Stalker" or the "Widow Maker"? He's anotherone that could be added to that list. He had a small stint but was used horribly back then.

I googled it, it was The Stalker. IIRC he came back and was in "The New Blackjacks" with Bradshaw as well.

There's just so many. Our latest is Kennedy. What happened to that Jimmy Wang Yang guy? I think the whole Divas thing needs reconstruction as well.

They seem to have demoted Jimmy Wang Yang to a jobber, which is a real shame.  He's very athletic and just needs some work on the mic, although they never really gave him chance to try.

Couple of guys come to mind, although from what I've read they might have been difficult to work with, Big Van Vader for one... another  I know for sure (he was actually climbing up the ranks pretty fast) but heard he pulled a lot of b.s backstage and would purposely injure fresh guys in the ring was Ahmed Johnson, same has been said about Crash Holly...these losers like to break in the green guys by busting them up (or as they call it in wrestling paying their dues)

Jimmy Wang Yang was going no where fast. To be sucessful in that business you need:
1. Mic skills (which he had zero)
2. A decent body (which lacked)
3. Charisma (which he lacked)
4. Wrestling skill (which he had little of)

That's why HHH IMO is the best guy going. He has the body, the ability, he has charisma and he can wrestle.

That’s bullshit.
“Initiation” is doing things like super gluing a rookie’s shoes to the floor or taking a shit in their gym bag, etc.

You don’t fvcking intentionally hurt someone!
That’s not breaking someone in; it’s taking liberties with a less experienced worker.
I knew Ahmed was a prick, and I’ve heard that Holly potatoed a few guys, too, but I thought he just worked stiff. I didn’t know it was to prove some kind of point.

I know Johnson refused to work with Chyna leading up to her I.C. run. Backstage he was quoted as saying, “Ain’t gonna let no bitch hit me…”
New flash: when the old man comes up with an idea, it’s best to follow through with that idea if you like your current job.
Anyway, I think Ahmed was gone shortly after that.

Agreed 100%

Amed Johnson hurt people because he was a clumsy idiot (see Ron Simmons shoot interview) in the ring and he was an additude backstage.

Do you remember when the WWE had their own reality show? Holly came on to wrestle with the wanna be's and BEAT the crap outta one of them.he left the kid with black and blue welts all over his body and a bloody nose.

Tough Enough?
Yeah, I’d forgotten about that segment, but remember now that you mention it.
I always suspected that, like a lot of what you see in reality shows, most of that was just “for the camera.”

I would hope that adult viewers had enough common sense to know that’s not how guys work on a regular basis or else everybody would be on the injured list, or at the very least walk around looking like they just sparred 10 rounds with Holyfield.

Still, Holly did have a reputation for being one of the stiffer workers in the company. But I believe he worked that way with everybody.
Greg Valentine and Billy Robinson were like that, too.

There was a hidden message there. You have to understand that before guys like HHH, Hogan, Austin, etc, etc, etc got thier big break into the real big leagues and started making real money, they had to pay thier dues. Wrestle the indy's for little to no money, gas money, travel around, eat canned noodles or tuna, break down the ring, etc. These kids come on tough enough withs mug attitudes and in the end one of them gets rewarded with a 250,000 dollar a year contract plus house show bonuses, ppv bonuses, etc. Just like that. Your damn right the Holly's of the world are gonna be pissed.

The Steiners never were as big as they were in NWA/WCW. I always thought Raven as well, he is great on the mic and has a great gimmick.

Yoko was a good worker when he first debuted, when he got way too fat when he came back in 95 he was useless. He had a good look, just not in the traditional sense IMO.

Hmmm.....Vader, Bigelow...good picks. I'll also add:

Tajiri: Here's a guy who didn't speak one word of English, yet the son-of-a-bitch was WAY over. Incredible in ring talent, lots of charisma. Never found anything worthwhile for him to do.

Super Crazy: Once again, another world class performer (ring wise). But since he's not 6 foot 3, while abusing steroids, Vince didn't see fit to use him.

Steamboat: wow....talk about a fuck up. One of the best wrestlers of his time, and arguably ever. But I guess since he was a NWA-WCW made "guy", he couldn't possibly move up to World (in WWF) title.

Ultimo Dragon: Jezzus.....re-ocurring theme here....

I cannot tell you how much it bothers me to see someone like Randy Orton, Kevin Nash and the like on TV, main eventing (even holding the top belts), when there are others more deserving who can't sniff top of the card.

Ricky Steamboat was a personal issue to Vince. After WM3 when Steamboat won the IC title in that classic match wioth Savage, he was supposed to hold on to the title for a year and lose it at WM4. Instead, he wanted time off to be with his wife & son after WM3 and Vince said he needed him on tv. Steamboat said no and thus Vince made him lose the IC title 2 months later to the Honky Tonk Man. Several months later when Steamboat returned, he was never utilized the same and even jobbed at WM4 to Greg Valentine in a clean pin.

I believe in his RF Vid interview, Steamboat also mentioned that WWF brass discussed with him another big push scheduled for right after WM IV.
I guess they left out that part about the dragon Halloween costume complete with scales and tail.

Actually, if memory serves me, I think Ricky left shortly after the 4th Mania (because he saw how he was being/going to be used - and he knew why), went back to NWA for a brief time, then returned again to the Fed, which is when they put him in the parade outfit.

That's exactly what he did and he went to NWA and had a great run winning the world title off of Ric Flair IMO the greatest wrestling matches ever produced.

You mean that series of matches they had in ’89?
Those were some of the best matches I’ve ever seen…anywhere - including Japan - and of any generation.

Flair & Ricky worked several programs together, but I always thought the matches throughout ’89 were their best outings.

Steamboat even considers those matches to be a step above his WM III bout with Savage, simply because Mania was all planned out A-Z.
The majority of his series with Flair was on the fly. The outcome was planned, but the route they took to get there was a lot of adlib.

It's at the end of one of the Triple H DVD's WWF put out around 2001/02 - in fact, that was primarily why I bought the disc.

Probably also on WWE 24/7, and I'm sure you can find it on Youtube.
