Special invites to the Olympia - who got them?
« on: June 02, 2009, 08:08:10 PM »
Who over the years have gotten them and why?

I'll start... Jay Cutler got a special invite (can't remember the year)... Not sure why... And don't think he took it...

Ed Van Amsterdam was promised one in 2009, but then it was pulled after some behind-the-scenes grumbling.

Didn't Vic Richards get one?

Seems like I seen that in a magazine article scan beside his picture.

Paul Demayo got one and I still am not sure why? Freaky quads but I can't understand why in the world he would ever have been given such an honor...

If Yates or Coleman wanted to come back, would they get one? And if not, how can they justify guys like Mike Quinn/Mike Matterazzo who basically haven't done shit in the pro ranks?

Ronnie and Dorian can come back and compete at the Olympia without qualifying because they are former Mr Olympia's, Sergio Oliva and Chris Dickerson entered the 84 Olympia under this criteria.

One of the first special invites was for Mike Katz at the 76 Olympia, he only got 4th in the tall class at the 75 Universe but was allowed into the 76 Olympia because there was no one to oppose Ken Waller in the heavyweight class, Arnold retired,Lou was at home being molested, Sege Nubret and Sergio Oliva had enough of the IFBB by then, Katz also benefited from being Jewish so he was well in with the Weider's and Oscar State, Roger Walker and Paul Grant both beat Katz in the 75 Universe but were still stuck as amateurs, Robby Robinson and Wilf Slyvester won their height classes in 75 but both lost the overall to Waller and stayed amateur ::)

There's nothing wrong with allowing special invites.
The promoter has the right to propose someone to the IFBB and they have the final say as to whether the invite is given.
It's been given on numerous occasions, most notably in 2002 to Gunther who took a standing ovation when he was awarded 5th place and went on to defeat Ronnie Coleman a couple of weeks later to take the GNC title. Had he not been in the Olympia he may not have had the momentum going into the GNC show.

Here`s what i wrote on the other Ed V amsterdam thread, see if you can figure out why they got special invites.Think of the country hosting the Olympia and what athlete got the special invite.

How come Mike Mattarazzo got a special invite in 91.
How come Francis Benfatto got a special invite in 89.
How come Armando Defant got a special invite in 89.
How come Ulf Larsson got a special invite in 87.
How come Gary Leonard got a special invite in 86.
How come Ben Herder,Salvador Ruiz,Ali Malla, and John Brown got special invites in 85.

Promoter of the show makes a recommendation, it gets put up for approval from the pro committee.

Were you hoping there was some G4P involved?
