Krugman Says No Signs of ‘V-Shaped’ Economic Recovery (Update1)

By Dara Doyle and Louisa Nesbitt

June 5 (Bloomberg) -- Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman said the world’s economy is showing “not a hint” of a “V-shaped” recovery marked by a swift decline and revival.

The economy is “stabilizing, not recovering,” Krugman, an economics professor at Princeton University in New Jersey, said today at a conference in Dublin. “Things are getting worse more slowly.”

Data this month showed that the contraction in Europe’s manufacturing and service industries is easing and confidence in the economic outlook is rising. The U.S. lost fewer jobs in May than forecast, a report today showed. The International Monetary Fund says its forecast for global growth of 1.9 percent next year is based on the premise of a healthy financial system.

“We have made the transition from sheer panic to chronic anxiety,” Krugman said, adding he’s has a “hard time” seeing what might drive a “full” economic recovery.

U.S. payrolls fell by 345,000 in May, the smallest decrease in eight months, after a revised 504,000 loss in April, the Labor Department said today in Washington.

The U.S. policy response to the economic crisis has been “extraordinarily aggressive,” Krugman said. “Unfortunately, it hasn’t been enough.” The country will need “some form of new taxes” to bring down its deficit, he added.

Service industries in the U.S. shrank at a slower pace in May while job losses mounted, indicating that any economic recovery will be slow to develop.

“The euro zone, like the United States, I fear, could be facing kind of a lost decade,” Krugman said.

I think Krugman is talking about GDP and to a lesser extent global economic expansion.

Unfortunatley at this juncture I think he's probably right.

Yep.  I'm skeptical as well about the rebound and growth of GDP.

Yep.  I'm skeptical as well about the rebound and growth of GDP.

Which will be quite interesting because Obama has based his whole budget projections off of a 3.5% or more growth in GDP by the end of this year or the next.

I'm sure our economy will def. be singing along at that pace in no time.

10000%

Most of the obama fan club does not know that fact.  The entire budget is based on unrealistic projections of growth that simply wont happen.

If they wanted any growth or any appearance of growth, they would have frontloaded the money. Barry said the stim would keep unemployment at 8%...its already at 9.5. This has been a debt and pork stim and nothing else.

The stim was no different than TARP - rushed in with scare tactics.

Let's be specific- the administration expected negative growth throughout THIS year. There was never any talk about GDP growth this year, it was always 2010. Additionally, those projections are based on the historic occurrence of rapid growth following recessions.

maybe Obama will just take the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan out of the budget (remember Bush never included them in any of his budgets) and then we can live in make believe land like we did when Bush..I mean Cheney was President

Yep, if he doesn't do it before 2010 he won't get it done at all.  Hopefully Americans will see there is no transparency in Obama's White House.  He's trying to push things through faster than what he said he would do; you know so the public could see what he's doing.  LoL.  Hopefully people see how much he is going to piss away their tax dollars.

The worst part is the lies he is telling.  VAT and Cap & Trade are simply tax schemes to pay for his garbage.

Additionally, there is no med mal tort reform.

Tort reform is the heart of the matter. Docs wouldn't need to charge ridiculous rates if their own insurance wasn't itself, ridiculous. But u have douchebags like Edwards that get super rich off of cases involving out of control monetary rewards. Plus trial lawyers give pretty good to the Dem party, no need to upset the cashcow.
