Gingrich at Republican Fundraiser Says Obama’s ‘Already Failed’ Share | Email | Print | A A A

By Heidi Przybyla

June 9 (Bloomberg) -- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said President Barack Obama’s plan to fix the economy through stimulus spending and government intervention to boost companies like General Motors Corp. has “already failed.”

Gingrich was the keynote speaker at a fundraising dinner for the Republican House and Senate campaign committees, filling a role President George W. Bush had served for the past eight years.

“Bureaucrats managing companies does not work, politicians dominating the economy does not work,” Gingrich told about 2,000 Republicans who attended the event at the Washington Convention Center last night.

Some Republican leaders hailed Gingrich, the leader of the 1994 “Republican Revolution,” as a de facto head of the party at a time when Republicans are looking for ideas to lead them back to the majority.

In introducing Gingrich, Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin called him the “architect of the last reform movement” and “the man of ideas.”

Gingrich was preceded by a series of Republican leaders who also took aim at Democrats and the government bailout of Detroit-based GM, New York-based American International Group Inc. and other companies.

Congress in February passed a $787 billion stimulus measure that Republican lawmakers have criticized, saying it hasn’t lived up to administration promises.

Obama said yesterday there are signs the economy may be headed toward a recovery. “We’re seeing a reduction in the fear that gripped the market just a few months ago,” he said at the White House.

‘Radical Agenda’

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said Obama has a “radical agenda.” Republicans have “watched them take over banks, insurance companies, auto companies,” he said, “and now they want to take over your health care.”

“We’re going to need some wins next November to slow down their agenda,” said McConnell. House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio said Democrats are using their control of Congress “to bury our children and the middle class under a mountain of debt.”

Actor Jon Voight, the master of ceremonies, opened the evening with a series of sharp attacks on Obama, something many Republican leaders have been hesitant to do in light of the president’s high approval ratings.

A USA Today/Gallup Poll taken May 29-31 gave him a 61 percent approval rating.

‘Weak Nation’

“We are becoming a weak nation,” said Voight, calling Obama a “false prophet.” Republicans need to find their way back to power to free the nation from “this Obama oppression,” he said.

Both McConnell and Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah, who followed Voight, seemed pleasantly surprised.

“I’m still just reveling that someone from Hollywood made a speech like that. I hope you’re going to be able to find work after this,” said McConnell. “I really enjoyed that.”

Senator John Cornyn of Texas called the speech “refreshing.”

The dinner, which included 150 members of Congress, raised $14.5 million for the Republican House and Senate campaign committees.

Alaska Governor and former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and Virginia Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell were among the special guests.

Gingrich dialed back his criticism of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, only saying she is “wrong” on the issue of quotas, without citing any rulings she had made in favor of racial quotas.

Gingrich Controversy

After Obama nominated Sotomayor on May 26, Gingrich posted a blog saying, “A white man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw.”

On June 3, Gingrich took back his description of her as a “racist,” though he continued to criticize a 2001 speech by her as a “betrayal” of fundamental principles. In the speech, she suggested a “wise Latina” would reach “better” decisions than white males.

Obama nominated Sotomayor, 54, last month to succeed retiring Justice David Souter. If confirmed by the Senate, she would be the first Hispanic to sit on the nation’s highest court.

Obama said last week: “I’m sure she would have restated” her 2001 remarks if given the chance and that she was saying that her life experiences would help her understand other people’s struggles.

Republican lawmakers have sought to distance themselves from the “racist” claims of Gingrich and conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh.

What about Gingrinch say, "I'm am not a Citizen of the World..."

Yes, Newt we know that you are American Citizen, but there also must be a world view, and the world must take a look at what is best for the WORLD as well...

See, his comment is what the world talks about our Arrogance.

I kinda agree, but GM of America (Gm of Europe is entirely diff animal) and Chrsyler have been effing up for decades. the UAW needs to be broken. Period. And a new GM and Chrysler need to be born...oh and but the way, Fiat was thinking of phasing out  or selling the Viper brand, becuse they don't want any Ferrari competitor. Also Chrysler never stated that they had a 35 million dollar bid for Viper, they try to hide that form the courts.

Just making it clear here.

When douchebag libs like Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins have an opinion, it's irrelevant because they're actors, and their opinion doesn't amount to a hill of beans.  All those celeb endorsements of Obama don't mean shit.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut

When actor Jon Voight says something that 333386 agrees with, it's newsworthy.  Gotcha!

Fine, I'll go with Newt's description instead calling Obama a "failed president."

Is that better for you???

The only other difference is I bet Voight can actually argue his point affectively. Sarandon and the rest only "feel" their liberalism.

Sweet.  You believe we can judge the effectiveness of Obama's presidency after he's served a full 7% of his term.

Hey, we're 3 minutes into the lakers game tonight... orlando up by 2 points.  Might as well turn the TV off, game's decided, right?  ???

that would be fine but fo rthe fact that in 200 days Obama has borrowed more than all previous presidents combined, took over banks and car companies, has plans to take over your health care and energy use, and now has to admit his projections for the stimilus were false.

Dont worry, when all collapses around this false prophet, I wont say I told you so.  I will welcome you to the haters club.

Yes because he's the best Barry ever. Did u miss the slobbering the media gave him after just the first 100 days. He said we've done more in the first 100 days then any admin before. Maybe if Barry had just said that he had alot of work to do and it wouldn't be easy then he would get some slack, not by me,but somebody would. Nope Barry is arrogantly pushing his failling socialist agenda on this country. He still is pushing medical bs when nobody can figure how to pay for it. He blames Bush in every speech and talks about how great he is. I guess u dem/libs don't like when ur "chickens come home to roost"...fucking disgrace.

LOL... Palin said "I told ya so" last night on hannity.  She's cool with judging the outcome after 7%.

Unemployment is lessening each month.  I know, the sky is falling and some snickering chinese college students are now the official dipstick for world economic policy...

But I'm optimistic.

What???????????????

It went from 8.9 to 9.4%%%%

But the trend shows improvement.  Things bottomed out when Dubya left office, and it's improved every month since.  There cannot be a complete reversal overnight, but gradually, this is promising:

The rate of new unemployment may be slowing but unemployment numbers are increasing.

Equally as bad is the Obama administration's claim of 'jobs saved' that no one can measure or confirm.  Its BS.  Its slick political speech.
They were already wrong about unemployment #s when they sold their stimulus plan, as I posted last week.  That was a major miscalculation.
Criticizm is appropriate for the direction the administration is taking things in the last 5 months.

I couldn't care less what some actor thinks on either side...but its nice to see someone break the hollywood mold of feel good liberalism.

John Voight is spot on.

I am still trying to understand...The republicans have america and the world in the state of FAILURE that it currently is in and there are some idiots like Gingrich, Voight and others wanting the repugs back!!!!

"Obama is a false prophet"...ya know..if a person does not know what they are talking about it is best to remain quiet. NO POLITICIAN HAS EVER BEEN ANYTHING OTHER THAN A GLORIFIED LIAR...no mystery there, so why is everyone acting shocked that promises are not being kept? Obama is not doing anything that has not ALWAYS been done. Does that make it right...absolutely not, but no one should be shocked over it.

"A weak nation"....american has always been a cowardly nation (just like the Lion in the Wizard Of Oz). Its power has come from BLUFF CALLS and attacking small practically UNARMED nations. Being so powerful how come america had its ass handed to it in Korea, Vietnam, is struggling in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dropping atomic bombs on Japan was frightening in its time because no one had ever seen a atomic explosion, but the thrill of that is over. America needs to get out of the business of promoting fear and worry and/or trying to bully other nations and get into working with the world and the rest of the nations... which the repugnants do not want.

There is an old saying BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR...YOU JUST MIGHT GET IT!!!

Again, job losses are slowing because the economy has likely finished correcting. It has nothing to do with Obama one bit. And it still has about 4 or 5 months of job losses to go. Did you beleive we were going to lose jobs until we got up to 50% unemployement? Did you believe the stock market was going to go down to 3000 points or something? When Bush was president during the autumn, the unemployment was lower than it is now, plus we had lower oil prices and lower interest rates on treasury bonds.

I would argue that Obama has had it much easier because he took over at a time when the economy had already finished much of its corrections. Then he passed that unnessecary stimulus package, and the market tanked another 22%.
Jan. Jobs: 36,000!!

When a man starts crying on Tv when talking about politics you know its time to ignore him.

He seemed to be pretty employed in the last season on 24.
