BTW...saying "I dare you" to the cop after being told repeatedly to step back or you're going to get tased...probably wasn't the best course of action...
How about 'my taxes pay your salary?'    :D

She brought the action on herself by not following th command of the officer...it was by the book 100%

You're trolling, right?  There's nothing else this guy could have done?

You, along with most cops and former cops, are a dick.  When tazers first came out, they were supposed to be used as substitues for deadly force, reducing the situstions in which a cop might fire his gun.  Instead, they started to be used to "gain compliance" in situations where an officer's safety was never at risk.  Essentially, legalized torture if you don't jump to a cop's liking.  Prior to tazers, it wasn't okay for a cop to hit you with his billy club if you were mouthing off at him or not moving fast enough unless his safety was at risk...  what's changed?   We've created a totalitarian police state by allowing this bullshit.  You're old enough to remember a time when things were different, so you know what I'm talking about.

Good post.  Police seem much too quick to reach for this tool.  The cops in these tazer vids always have in common the fact that their idea of psychological manipulation consists solely of turning up the volume.  When is the last time shouting at someone made them calmer?  And none of these guys seem to know how to immobilize, incapacitate, or maneuver someone without a tazer when a confrontation gets physical.  Is Mahoney running the academy these days or what?  When cops use the tazer as something more than a strictly defensive weapon, people are going to view it as a weapon of attack or torture and be more inclined to take defensive action of their own.

The threat of the taser is supposed to be enough of a deterrent, that MOST people will comply with the officers command and cease whatever action they have chosen...if you're stupid enough to not be in compliance after repeated commands telling you you will be tased....then you deserve it.

You can't think of anything else that the cop in this video should have done instead?  And you believe that the woman is stupid and that she deserved it?  Is that how you want to go on record?

If the woman would have complied this never would have happened.  She brought it on herself 100%.  End of story.

Absolutely...

I'm sure there are hundreds of things the officer COULD have done...but he didn't.

I can think of a few different things the LADY could have done...like just signing the ticket and going about her business...like the hundreds of other motorists who got tickets that day...or complied with the command to STOP...or stepped back away from the road as the officer asked repeatedly...or stopped being difficult for the 3 times he asked her to before tasing her...

There was a longer clip of the incident on tv but I was too lazy to look it up on youtube.

The lady was being a bitch from the very get go.

If everyone was calm and rational we wouldn't need police Bob.  It's a cop's job to deal with irrational people.  The issue at hand is how they do it.

This should be a training video on how not to handle a situation of this kind.  Has there been a drop off in non-tazer training since the tazer was introduced?  I'm sure there are plenty of competant cops around, but the one's in the tazer vids seem like they don't know how to do anything but pull the trigger.

An 89-year old just murdered a security guard in a museum. A 72-year old lady can also pull the trigger

If you had been tasered, your toupee could have caught fire. That would actually have been quite a sight..

The cop wasn't emotionally disengaged.  He didn't make an effort to find a non violent solution or explore other ways to get the woman to comply with him, he just dug his heels in and threatened force.  He never achieved any degree of control of the situation with what he had tried up to that point but it didn't occur to him to try anything else.  He didn't make an effort use a less painful method of physical persuasion.  He didn't try to incapacitate her and arrest her without the tazer.  The tazer was his first and only idea even though he was never in any danger.

You seem to think I'm defending grandma.  Not at all, take her off to jail.  What I question is the cop's conduct and what kind of training he received.  He looked lost out there.

The problem is that you don't have any knowledge about police training.  When someone becomes hostile you are authorized to OC spray or taser the suspect.

When they present a threat, of course.  But just to get them to comply with an order?  And as a first option?  I doubt that's the current policy.

He did make an effort....by asking her to comply NUMEROUS times.

And even AFTER threatening force...she STILL didn't comply and was even taunting the officer.

It's not up to him to try 10 different methods to get the person to follow his command...it's up to the person to comply the FIRST time.

Bob can back me up on this.  You ask them, tell them, and then you make them.  Simple as that.

If a suspect acts in a threatening manner and fails to comply, you can employ these measures.  I've went a football game where a guy refused to leave and grabbed onto a fence.  The officers gave him once chance to comply and then tasered him until he did.

Yes...to get them to comply with a command given....THATS what prevents the situation from escalating...in this case...she could have went into the road and been struck by a passing vehicle...she could have had a weapon on her person...etc

Exactly right....the idea is that the threat of using the taser will get them to comply faster and more efficiently than putting your hands on them...which can lead to MORE resistance, possibly injury to the person and/or officer...

A cop should be able to arrest a little old lady without using a taser Bob.  This guy should be bussing tables at a Ho Jo's.
