LOL... actually I'm in a position where, down the road, I may adopt several young children. Family stuff. I'm getting involved in their lives now, and the thought of possibly inheriting them one day is exciting and scary at the same time.

I was hoping people here could share their experiences, any pitfalls to look out for, and anything I can do to establish relationships now, in case I end up receiving them. I will be taking them once a week, doing something fun like park or science center... but beyond that...

They are extended family living locally. it may be soon, it may be years down the road. I'm getting prepared now. Financial, space, schedules, everything. Overwhelming but such an awesome feeling at the same time.

My neighbors adopted a kid from China. They got her when she was about 1 and I think she is 4 now. If you have any specific questions you'd like me to ask them, let me know.

You are a good man Rob! Is one of the kids my "buddy?"

My mother was adopted,
My sister was adopted,
and now she adopting two more kids
(I guess Madonna and Branjelina missed a few).

my grandmother was adopted. But we don't know much about her so my experience is mute. The only thing i have an opinion on with adoption is that one should adopt in country, not sure abouit racially. I can see the pros and cons in that.

I don't believe in adoption, defeats the purpose of propagating one's DNA.

If it were me , I'd be spending some one on one time with each one and learning about what they like and dislike , things that interest them and give them troubles .. every child has their own stuff going on whether or not they are part of a large group of siblings or not .

The group stuff will give you an insight on how they get on with each other and that's real good to know .. I'd also make sure they are doing good in school and help them if they need it.

Sports is good too ... playing softball all together or something maybe ?

thanks for all the advice. I'm falling in love with these kids. Stopping to see them almost every day. With my own and my neices, I had seven kids much of the day yesterday at our house. Getting to know each of them, trying to develop something unique with each. The youngest is 2, the oldest is 6. Despite coming from a very broken and violent situation, they've returned to being calm and happy and 'normal' kids almost instantly.

I think the hardest part is getting 7 juice boxes, 7 snacks, etc, every time!

got them all set up in school. got all their shots. One has a severe candy addiction courtesy of a neglectful caretaker who fed her candy all day.. Breaking it with fruit.

They're getting the hang of the new family. Still boggles the mind. Four new family members just like that. Kids are amazingly adaptable. If you took me from everything I knew and put me in a new home, I'd need a little adjustment time. These kids are just playing and laughing and living it up like nothing happened.
