Do you think that politics in the USA has become more polarised since 9/11?
I ask this because as an outsider looking in, it seems clear to me that there a clear line has emerged between the liberals and the conservatives. I remember when I worked in DC I met a guy named Cal Thomas (i think he's quite well known?) he basically told me that even though he was a strong conservative he missed the days when left and right would sit together and discuss issues amiably, now he felt like politics had turned into one big mudslinging match, and that people tuned into network tv just to see people shout at each other for the entertainment value.
Seems sad to me, because whilst the left right distinction in Britain is very clear, there is a measure of respect and debate which doesnt seem to be there in the USA anymore.
On the other hand people also tell me that conservatives in USA are pussies compared to what they were in say the 1960's and that even the traditional red states are no way near as conservative as they once were, which would seem to indicate that maybe there is less polarisation.
If anyone has thoughts on this I would be interested to know.
