SEOUL, South Korea -- North Korea test-fired three short-range missiles Thursday, South Korea's Defense Ministry said, a move that aggravates already high tensions following Pyongyang's recent nuclear test and U.N. sanctions imposed as punishment.

Two ground-to-ship missiles were fired from the eastern coastal city of Wonsan on Thursday afternoon, a ministry official said on condition of anonymity citing department policy.



The North also fired a third missile later from the east coast, but the exact site and the type of a rocket was not immediately known, the official said. Yonhap news agency, citing an unnamed military official, reported all three missiles flew about 60 miles (100 kilometers) and identified them as KN-01 missiles with a range of up to 100 miles (160 kilometers).

North Korea had earlier called for a no-sail zone in waters off its east coast through July 10 for military drills. That designation was viewed as a prelude to such missile tests.

The launches came as North Korea's relations with the United States, South Korea and other countries were already severely strained after its May 25 underground nuclear test and a series of missile firings. The U.N. Security Council adopted a tough sanctions resolution last month to punish the communist regime.

"We had expected that they will fire short-range missiles at any time," South Korea's Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan told The Associated Press at a reception held at the U.S. ambassador's residence to mark Independence Day on July 4, which falls this weekend. "It's not a good sign because they are demonstrating their military power."

Don't worry about our boys across the DMZ....Kim won't dare attack because that would be the total annihilation of his country and then he would have to live in china....and there would be no dynasty to pass on to his sons.....that would be humiliating.....Kim is all bluff..he is a good poker player though

Destroyers, subs, cruisers, frigates, and I'm sure I've seen aircraft carriers.  I can see Pearl Harbor from my office.  I can also see the airport.  The military uses the Honolulu International Airport to take off all the time.  Pretty neat, but you have to be looking at just the right time to them take off.

I agree with you that that would be Kim's strategy..take seoul, inflict heavy damage and then appeal to the UN for a cease fire...the U.N. pussies will appeal for the cease fire but no U.S. president will accept a cease fire at that point......the U.S. will retaliate with every thing including the kitchen sink and will exact punishing damage on North Korea....the U.S. will hit them with missiles from submarines, and shit like that...they will sink the NK navy and will destroy the infrastructure of kim's army....that country will never recover again.....and also....Kim's troops will begin to defect because they will not have a country to go back to....

of course Seoul will be totally destroyed as well but in the long run, SK will survive and move on....unless china decides to punish U.S. and SK by invading and destroying SK in retaliation

Honestly, we have the bush doctrine of pre-emption if we feel threatened.  I think something along the lines of "We're gonna fire rockets at you in 2 days" is quite a threat.
