whats the deal with so many prison docs on tv?

I'm talking about the ones on National Geographic and MSNBC

Whats the psychology behind it? fear mongering with showing people in lockdown, maximum security prisons, murderers and rapists etc.

Is it a deflection away from politicians and corporate exec's?

Preparatory propaganda paving the path for prison privatization? 

Something that appeals to a frightened population and gives the illusion of justice and safety?

A little candy for the Lynddie England in all of us?

A commercial for the American Justice System showing how badly you need them to stem the tide of bloody chaos?

A way to make sure everyone is asking, "What do we do with all these crooks!?" instead of "How did we get all these crooks in the first place?  Other countries don't have these problems."

Not an excuse.  Everyone knows the rules.  If you don't do the crime you don't have to worry about it.  Is it unfair?  Yes.  The solution = don't commit the crime.

if people didnt watch it they wouldnt show it...
but people do watch it (i have watched a few) so they continue to produce these shows...

i think those shows are cool.. better than most other documentaries/reality shows  out there
