So my friend's girlfriend cus is a PT and teaching a cross fit class. Like 3 friends plus my friends chick go. TheY being bugging me to go. But I like lifting and cardio machines. The class is 5 times a week for 20 mins. It cost $50 a month. Is in the dudes back yard, BTW.
Anyway, I'm should I join? Anyone tried this shit?

It's crosstraining with a nice culty aftertaste. Google "crossfit wod" to get a taste of the workouts. If you enjoy tons of submaximal work, you might like it. The women it attracts tend to be either raw bone ugly or super hot with daddy issues, so that might be a bonus. You'll be a alpha male if you're over 200lbs, most crossfit men are on the lean bottom twink side.

crossfit should be used to supplement your regular weight training

i believe in incorporating some of their workouts as a part of your cardio workout

like the "grace" workout; that will get your heart beat really high, imho

btw, i realize that it comes as a big shock that i'm, somewhat, endorsing using crossfit

bottomline, if you are looking for a fitness model type look, then i would encorporate some crossfit stuff
if you are looking to be huge, it would be a waste of time

For the most part all the people who do cross fit if you saw them on the street you would not even think they worked out.

Once at a party some chick overheard some cross fit twink bragging about his workouts and she said "but yeah you dont have any muscles."  The guy then proceded to "show" her what a beast he was ripped off his shirt started doing tons of push ups ran around did some leaps into the air, bodyweight squated a bunch of reps, did 100 sit ups, more leaps, followed by some attempted one arm pushups, sprinted in place for 2 mins then looked at her and said see I told you.  she and everyone around her started laughing their asses off.

Perhaps if you cut it back, and and used it sparingly. I wouldn't screw with it if you're a heavy lifter*. All that sub maximal work will probably wear you down to much and annoy any old injures if used as they teach. If you want to try a real conditioning workout, try this- http://ditillo2.blogspot.com/2009/04/advanced-pha-bob-gajda.html . for a bit then go back to more traditional stuff.

* Crossfit heavy= 1 to 2 plates a side at most.

The guy was an idiot but I think he looked small because he didn't abuse growth hormone like some people do...

Cross fit in my opinion reminds me of Arthur Jones worshippers.  The only way is their way and if you don't agree you're an idiot.  Cross fit is great for fitness but their leader is a terrible runner so he's against distance running only sprints. A little bizarre to me. If you claim competence in all areas why is this one neglected?

They also seem to love kipping chin ups where you throw/jerk your whole body upward to make pull ups easier.  It does have it's role in fitness but if you're trying to build your bicep and lats stop the kips.  Another facet is olympic lifting.  I love olympic lifting but they in general use light weights and turn it into an endurance activity.  They are fond of the overhead snatch squat which lets admit most athletes don't have the specialized flexibility to do it with an empty bar. 

I believe in body weight exercises.  Some of the best built guys I have seen do only bodyweight exercises.  I also try to be competent in different areas but I do realize that trying to be good at everything leaves you bad at most things.

big time true. i see them using thier legs and momentum to get up there.  it's a joke!  Would like to see those creeps do a real set of chins using muscle instead of momentum.  LOL I just laugh anyhow let them keep doing it thier way and not building any muscle.

Haha.  To each his own man.  I know my military buddies love the Crossfit variations because of the functional strength it gives.

To the poster that mentioned the sprints, I would offer this advice as a runner; intervals work.  I've worked with collegiate and marathon coaches, and they are avid proponents of interval training to increase endurance and speed.

just an update. I went today. You guys were right. All twinks and women. ;D :-\ All the good looking chicks were married or have boyfriends, I checked. ;D
Anyway, the people do different workouts, but they are all a version of the same thing, workout is like this:
jog or use a rowing machine
21 front squats with bars with rubber plates, beginners use plastic sticks
10 clapping push ups
10-12? chin ups with strap connect to bar and person's foot
repeat
im guessing it a modified and tone down 300-ish workout.

I am not going back. I was just watching today, but i left 3/4th though the workout. The pt was newly certified. The chick helping him, i don't think was certified, was trying to teach this guy on how to do a squat, and she was actually teaching him wrong form. :-\
