First carb day on Anabolic Diet and what a dissapointment
« on: July 06, 2009, 02:02:56 PM »
I have been no carb for 4 straight weeks on the Anabolic Diet.  To be honest it was easy as hell to skip carbs.  The only hard part is when I'd cook my family dinners and would have to avoid the carbs, but other than that it was a breeze.  July 4th was my first carb up weekend. The timing was perfect.  I couldn't wait to have pancakes, fried rice, buns with my burgers, ice cream, potato salad, watermelon etc...

Well it was a BUST.  First thing in the morning I cook up some pancakes and it wasn't what I wanted. The craving was just not there.  Two small pancakes and I was done.  I just skipped eating more and had some home made fried rice instead.  Then it came to having some pasta and again I just didn't satisfy me.  So for dinner I bbqd some hot dogs and burgers and after two bites just threw away the buns and at the meat.  Something about carbs just didn't sit well with me.  I started to feel bloated and heavy.  I was tired as a mofo, especially sunday morning.  I didn't want to move and I didn't go heavy on the carbs at all.  Next weekend, I'm just going to add some rice as a side to my meals, maybe have some oatmeal and that's it.  Carbs just make me feel like shit.  It's funny because I've never gone this long without carbs and didn't realize the negative effect they had on me.  I feel a lot better this morning and being back on the no carb diet.

I have started last monday the same diet, so far I'm not missing carbs at all, but I'll try to car up this weekend, after two weeks.
I'll report what happens.

Maybe you were too long without carbs, that's why you didn't feel that carb up rush?!

I don't think I waited too long.  The book says it can take 3-4 weeks for your body to adjust on the no carb before you should start the carb ups, but it's amazing how unappetizing they've become.  I don't miss them at all. I understand why we need the carb ups to shock our bodies and it will help burn fat but I'm not looking forward to it anymore.  Kind of wierd.  What is odd is my weight is only down a few pounds but I look a hell of a lot leaner.  I have been getting comments from a lot of folks that I'm looking leaner.

Good post guys! Thanks for sharing your diet issues with carbs. Has anyone tried ice cream for the weekend or blueberry wheat pancakes with honey on top? How can one get sick of these foods?  ;D Keep us posted!!!

Methinks oatmeal and brown rice won't work. The purpose of carbing up during weekends on the so-called anabolic diet is not only to increase glycogen stores, but to boost insulin to help repair muscle tissue, just like you eat tons of fat during the week to boost testosterone levels. Oatmeal has a very low GI.

As for feeling like shit on carbs, this is not normal unless you haven't eaten any in a long time and then binge of simple carbs. Glucose is the prefered food source. It is the only one that doesen't require digestion and it is the only fuel the body can use. I don't know anyone who doesen't enjoy eating ripened grapes. How can you not like the end fuel of all metabolism? Everything else you eat gets converted to glucose because it's the only thing the body can use - the exception being ATP for quick bursts of power for muscle cells.I feel much worse on heavy meats and other foods loaded with protein and fats and no carbs.

that's the problem right there.  I LOVE ice cream but it just wasn't what I wanted.  Same as for pancakes.  Maybe this diet f'd with my brain or something.

I think when you low carb for so long, it takes your body a little time to adapt back to the high carbs, sometimes it just rejects it and you are on the shitter a lot, other times you are just not enjoying it. Happens to me when I diet sometimes, but sometimes it feels SOOO GOOD!

Ice cream is not the best choice for a carb up, but it sure is good  ;D

Hopefully this time around it will be only one week in between and I won't feel so shitty.  I did have an amazing workout yesterday so the glycogen levels must have been settled from the weekend.  Sunday I just wanted to sleep all day.  It was funny how Saturday night I just didn't want anything to do with carbs and I didn't have that many.  I thought for sure going in that I was going to be a carb maniac but it didn't happen.

The original book by Pisquale never recommended more than 6 days without a carb up.

I tried this diet for 4-5 weeks earlier this year in Feb-March.

I did my first carb days after only one week and went crazy - icecream, chocolate, weetbix, honey, golden syrup, oatmeal, pasta, ricecakes, hotdogs, sushi, icecream, weetbix.  I remember lying on the floor for quite some time just feeling fucked, but it was good.

Crazy pumps Sunday nights from just flexing for abit.

I've been having amazing pumps but the day after training I'm extremely sore in that muscle group. It this due to the glycogen?

Interesting.  Same here.  My chest is never that sore after a workout but this time it was.  I worked out chest on Saturday afternoon after loading carbs all day.  The next day it hurt like a mofo.

Out of interest - what does a regular day of eating look like (for you)?

Here's my post from the other thread
Mind you I'm 6'4" and 300 pounds. Not sure what my bodyfat % is.

5:00 am wake up, ECA stack + BCAA + 5 grams fish oils

30 min low impact cardio

post cardio -whey shake, 10 grams of fiber, scoop emerald green and 5 grams fish oil.

8:30 am 1 1/3 pound sirloin burger ( no bun,or ketchup) 90/10 fat + broccoli

11:30 am 1 cup pistachios or almonds or mac nuts

2:30 pm 1 1/3 pound sirloin burger 90/10 fat (no bun or ketchup)+ 5 grams Evening Primrose oil + brocolli

4:30 pm BCAAS and other ECA

5:00 pm workout

6:00 pm post workout - Whey shake + BCAAs + 5 grams Fish Oils

6:30 pm 1/2 chicken (no skin) or a steak or 2 buffallo hotdogs from costco, broccoli

8:30 pm before bed, whey mixed with 10 grams fiber, 1 tablespoon fortified flax, 1 tablespoon mac nut oil

So I've been eating similar all week, maybe sometimes having 4 eggs and cheese omelets , adding cheese to the burgers etc...

mon of steele, the diet looks good. I eat that way too. Feel good. By the way, isn't 20 grams of fish oil dangerous?? Research hemoragic stroke. The eskimos have a high rate of it possibly due to all the fish they eat. Just asking, no offense meant. take care, barretta.

From the studies I read 20 grams isn't that much.  You can get that much eating a decent piece of salmon. From the AD booklet it explains the science of how you use fat to metabolize fish oils.  Numerous studies show that 10-20 grams is very beneficial.  I think the eskimos get in excess of hundreds of grams a day, especially from eating blubber.

Last time I seriously looked into it, they were saying that delayed onset soreness was caused by the inflammatory response/white blood cell aggregation in the muscles, rather than from lactic acid production, so I wouldn't think it would be due to a lack of glycogen.
