Israeli councilor faces probe for saying all Arabs must 'disappear'

The State Prosecution on Sunday instructed the police to investigate Upper Nazareth City Councilor Ze'ev Hartman on suspicion of incitement to racism.

The move comes after a complaint was filed in April against Hartman, who called for the city's Arabs to "disappear," in an Independence Day greeting to local residents.

Councilors had been asked record personal greetings for Israel's 61st Independence Day to be aired over the holiday.
   
When the camera reached Hartman, he stated his wish for "all the Arabs to disappear." The cameraman, reportedly stunned by the statement, asked Hartman if he was being serious, to which he replied "absolutely serious."

Following Hartman's remarks, Upper Nazareth's spokesman for Arab Affairs, George Shahada, took the recording and lodged a complaint of racism and incitement with local police.

The state prosecution said several complaints of inciting racism and violence had been filed against Hartman in the past, but he was never indicted.

In 1998, the Tzomet-Gesher-Moledet party was banned from running in Upper Nazareth municipal elections after a similar complaint was lodged against Hartman, who ran on the faction list.

Upper Nazareth is a problematic area...no doubts there.

So ill elucidate a little for you all, since the usual bullshit seems to be coming out. Essentially upper nazareth was a town built in 1950ish right next to the CHRISTIAN arab town of Nazareth. The new Jewish town was built to house new Jewish immigrants coming in from the arab countries. Recently it has been the sight of a huge influx of Russian speaking immigrants, many of whom carry a lot of hostility to the arabs for reasons i still havent been able to work out. Now the problem is this, housing permits in Arab Nazareth have been severely restriced in recent times, so the Arabs started moving into upper Nazareth right next door. So what you're getting at the moment is a mixing of populations, which is making the Jews extremely uneasy...bear in mind most arabs in nazareth are christian so its basically a racial skew. Now this dude Hartman is basically an arsehole, he ran for a party that basically advocated the forced explusion of Arab citizens of Israel to other countries. So he enjoys stoking up the flames every now and then knowing it will piss the arabs off. Problem is though, is that he's making the Jews scared, so those Jews well off enough are leaving upper nazareth leaving more empty appartments for arabs to buy up.
