July 8 (Bloomberg) -- Google Inc., owner of the most- visited Internet search engine, is developing a computer operating system based on its Chrome Web browser, taking aim at Microsoft Corp. in its strongest market.

The system will be designed at first for low-cost laptops called netbooks, Google said in a blog post. The company is in talks with partners on the project and computers running the software will be available in the second half of 2010.

The plan escalates Google’s rivalry with Microsoft, which extends to Web search, browsers and business applications such as word processing and spreadsheets. Windows, Microsoft’s flagship product, runs about 90 percent of the world’s personal computers. Google is also trying to spur Web-ad sales after reporting its first sequential revenue drop as a public company.

“There is a possibility that the new OS can break the paradigm Microsoft and Intel created over the past 20 years,” aid Yukihiko Shimada, a computer analyst at Mitsubishi UFJ Securities Co. in Tokyo. “There is plenty of business opportunity for Google in this market.”

Google said it’s working with computer makers to introduce a number of netbooks next year, without identifying any of the companies. The Chrome OS will be open-source, meaning the program code will be open to developers, Google said. The software will work on top of the Linux operating system.

There is already a free operating system called Linux.  It works perfectly and can be installed and used by complete morons nowadays.  It has "just slightly" more development time (and scope) and can be acquired now, as opposed to in 2010.

It's also open source, too.

problem is not all programs and not many games are adjusted to it.

aside from that it's great. hard to get any viruses on it. there is only like 200 viruses to it compared to the millions on windows.

That won't be any different for google os for a long time.  That's what I mean by scope.  You can tell by their announcement that they are not currently planning to come out with a directx killer that makes their os competitive with the desktop market.

Not too intrigued. Call me nuts but Windows 7 is actually getting me pretty excited. I had the opportunity to install it and it wasn't half bad at all. Can't wait for the Retail version to hit shelves. I may actually pay for it too!

Eh, Google releases tons of new products but seems to have really bad ADD and inability to follow through.  Google Knol was supposed to supplant Wikipedia, Orkut was going to kill Myspace / Facebook, Chrome was going to kill off Firefox / Internet Explorer, etc.  Will this operating system be any different?  Doubtful.

Virii aren't as much of a concern on Linux it's the security flaws which are more abundant in Linux than in Windows.  They can be patched up and taken care of but the average user has no idea how to do that. The only reason there are more virii written for Windows than any other OS is because Windows is used by more people than any other OS.  Just as the Mac OS has gained user base a direct correlation in rise of virus attacks follows.  Linux is widely used in many corporations as it is, but most have IT departments handling their administration and upkeep, unlike the average home user.
