Byrd Blasts ‘Cap and Trade’

Senior W.Va. senator stands firmly behind coal

WHEELING - He is not yet back to work in the Senate chamber, but U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd is opposing "cap and trade" legislation pushed by the Obama administration.

The 91-year-old Byrd, D-W.Va., was released from an unidentified Washington, D.C. hospital last week after a month-long stay for a staph infection. He expects to return to the chamber before the Senate begins debate on "cap and trade" - which is tentatively set for this fall, according to Byrd's office.

"I cannot support the House bill in its present form," Byrd said in a statement. "I continue to believe that clean coal can be a 'green' energy. Those of us who understand coal's great potential in our quest for energy independence must continue to work diligently in shaping a climate bill that will ensure access to affordable energy for West Virginians. I remain bullish about the future of coal, and am so very proud of the miners who labor and toil in the coalfields of West Virginia."

Byrd grew up in the coalfields of Stotesbury, W.Va., in Raleigh County. Jesse Jacobs, spokesman for Byrd, said the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee will begin marking up the "cap and trade" bill later this month, with floor debate scheduled for September or October.

"So it is our hope that yes, Sen. Byrd will be here to vote on the legislation," Jacobs continued. "His return will be determined by his doctors and family members."

"Cap and trade" legislation - also known as House Resolution 2454 - is intended to reduce carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants over the next 40 years. It establishes a program that allows pollution permits to be bought and sold. The measure narrowly passed the U.S. House on June 26 by a vote of 219-212.

Hopefully Byrd and Inhofe can kill this disaster.

A Senator from a coal state is against cap & trade. How not surprising!

He's trying to save jobs, unlike Obama, who is trying to kill jobs.

There is no such thing as a "green job".

I think they are getting scared at the details in this monster that only came out after the fact since no one in the House of Reps even read the damn thing.

This is why I like your system.
Regional representation is equal.

Senators have to be fearful of the constituents so bills that will screw over whole regions have little chance of passing.

Even if they sound good to New York and LA.

Senior Democrat senators said on Wednesday they would change a provision that imposes carbon taxes on imports following warnings that the clause in the House’s cap-and-trade bill could spark a global trade war.

The House’s bill contained tough provisions to impose carbon tariffs, aimed at protecting American companies’ competitiveness against imports from countries without equivalent carbon emission controls to those in the US.

-Have fun buying Chinese and Indian goods.

the sooner this gets passed the better for the world and the US.

A great idea to cap carbon emissions.  Anyone opposed to this bill is obviously misinformed about pollution and wants to live in squalor so long as they can drive a hummer.  Typical yankee doodle scum.

So says another informed poster.

Hindering the American economy without cutting Carbon emissions.

That is what will happen with Cap and Trade.

Especially since the jobs can now go to China.

Someday you will wake up from the delusion of Al Gore and see that almost all problems attributed to Global Warming are caused by other Micro climate changes that people have made.

The real problems of deforestation and irresponsible Land use, have little to do with Macro climate change.

The draining of Lake Chad and the Ural sea or example are directly linked to poor land use strategies.
The massive flooding in Bangladesh is caused by man, because they tried to drain the natural swamps.
Deforestation and desertification is caused by the need for wood to cook with and also has little to do with climate change.

But if wasting money on programs lets you sleep at night, then go ahead.
Just don't include me.

Dumbest post of the year.  You are seriously brain dead if you believe that.

This is nothing more than a give away to Goldman Sachs and will do nothing to cap emissions.  All it is doing is pushing the emissions overseas while imposing more taxes on the american citizens.

This is a major job killer and even the authoers of the bill know it.  Go move to Spain if you like this garbage where they have 18% UE and it cost 800K for every "green job".
