question regarding chest
« on: July 15, 2009, 06:19:30 PM »
How come my chest grows much better when i do dumbell flyes, benchpress never did anything for my chest. upperchest does seem to grow on the inclines a bit, but no dramatic change all round in the chest like the flyes movement, it improves my outer and inner chest allround, used to think its only for the outer width for the pecs, but it looks like its great for the inner too. opinions are welcome

Do you only do flyes? If not, how do you know it's the flyes that's building your chest?

i know because i used to do only inclines and flat with dumbells/barbell, with little focus on flyes.

right now i focused a lot more on flyes, 4 workouts or so, and the chest never looked this developed from all angles.

im quite positive my form is great on the presing movements, if i train chest i think chest, and act like chest is pushing it up, now you know my form is good, what do you make out of it?

my delts ony take over in the flat bench bress, thats why i dont see this excersize for building my chest, more of a power and ego movement to see how you can increase the poundage and reps each workout.

cables do nothing for my chest, only dumbells. only cable movement that i like are triceps pushdowns and especially reverse triceps pushdowns.

I think what you make out of it is that what works for you is flyes.  I know that seems like a fairly useless response, but my point being, you know what works for you and you know what doesn't, what exactly more can you make of it?  Different strokes for different folks.  If you've got decent form then you're putting about the same amount of pressure on your chest as someone who responds to it might do, it might be that your chest simply doesn't respond to that.

hmm it should work equal for all humans i think.
try this out:

sit there and just make the pressing movement and then the flyes movement, look at your chest and notice the difference in the contraction, its much more intense on the flyes aint it?

Incline flyes or flat or both? I love incline flyes but flat put an unatural feel on my shoulders. Do you have long arms? That could be why the presses arent as effective but hey like someone else said whatever works for you. I alwys got best results from doing an incline press then a incline flye back to a press and finishing off with cables

Heavy dumbbell PRESSES are the key to growth.

Eat more, use a lot of close-grip tricep bench presses to build those tris up, then hit the DB presses on flat and inclines.

I know what you mean.  My chest & tris day is db pressing and flies.  I should probably add dips back in, but I quit bb benching.  Doesn't engage the chest enough imo unless I'm pre-exhausted and I suspect the unalterable hand position on a bb causes me shoulder probs.

I think flyes work better for people because they perform them in a matter that promotes growth.  Usually slower, more time under tension, with a weight that is not so heavy that it reduces the negative portion of the muscle.
Most people on bench try to lift as much as possible and never really give the muscle the stimulation it needs, only the neurological system.

Sure, it's a more isolated movement.   There's less there to take over the chest.  I don't have all the time in the world to spend isolating in the gym,  though, and I don't have trouble responding to more compound exercises involving the chest, so I'd rather press.  I have a fairly large chest for my build (small arms are my big problem) so for me, I don't need to worry about changing my routine to further target them.  That's the thing, we all have deficiences and have to use different approaches to difficult bodyparts.  It's in those deficiences that we get cute with isolation.
