Poll shows tight race for 2012 GOP nomination
Posted: 05:08 PM ET

From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney

(CNN) – The Republican presidential primary process doesn't kick off for more than two years, but perhaps it's never too early to take a measure of where a race that's far from starting stands.

It appears to be a three-way race between former White House hopeful Mitt Romney, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and Mike Huckabee — also an ex-presidential aspirant. Romney stands at 26 percent in the new survey, compared to 21 percent for Palin, and 19 percent for Huckabee.

But the poll, which surveyed 455 Republicans and Republican-leaning voters between July 10-12, carries a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points, meaning all three are essentially locked in a dead heat.

Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker and current conservative commentator stands at 14 percent while Tim Pawlenty and Haley Barbour — the governors of Minnesota and Mississippi respectively — are each in low single digits.

The Gallup survey shows similar results to those of a recent CNN poll that also indicated the same three Republicans are locked in hypothetical race for the party's nomination.

But while Romney, Palin, and Huckabee are clustered on top, the survey shows voters hold a much higher favorability rating of the soon-to-be ex-Alaska governor than the other two Republicans. Palin scores a 72 percent approval rating compared with Huckabee's 59 percent and Romeny's 56 percent.

Though Palin, who has firmly remained in the headlines since she was tapped to be the party's vice presidential candidate last August, appears considerably better known than both men: only 7 percent of Republicans have no opinion of her compared to 28 percent who said the same of Romney and 25 percent who lacked a view of Huckabee.

Of course, polls more than two years before an election are far from predictive: A Gallup survey in 2005 showed Hillary Clinton would win the 2008 Democratic nomination over John Kerry while Rudy Giuliani would edge out McCain on the Republican side. President Obama was not included in the poll.

I think Huck or some quiet governor may be the good choice.  I'd love to see huntsman resign his obama job and come home to run for office, he'd he a stud who could beat obama.

Please, republicans, stop settling for a mediocre choice like Palin.  She's fun to look at, but she's thick headed - and doesn't realize the things she doesn't know.  People like that are scary.  I prefer the candidate who says "I'm not an expert on a lot of things, but I make good choices."

Palin stood up and nodded as Mccain announced she knew more about energy THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE UNITED STATES.  And i betcha she believes it to...

Well-said, 240. I've admired Huck for a while now, and he's probably gonna get my vote in 2012.

And yeah, people really need to get over this obssession with that cult figure from Alaska.

palin is the britney spears of politics.

family drama,

barely qualified in the field she's in (brit can't sing and palin has about 2 years of gov experience that she campaigned during),

does anything to remain in spotlight (runners mag? reallly?)

And above all, stands in the way of more qualified people to take leadership roles in that field.  They're fun distractions, better for ratings, but 2008 results (election and record sales) showed people will watch a drama story on news but won't put their money (or vote) on the sideshow freak.

huck 2012 baby!

Im not the biggest Sarah Palin fan in the world, but she would be much better than Mike Huckleberry. I am telling you, Huckleberry will get trounced in the general election. The GOP needs to find a way to get him out of the race. Apparently the Democrats said that they had tons of dirt on him that they were going to unleash during the general election. The Republicans should do that long before the primaries start. This guy knows absolutely nothing about international economics and is therefore unqualified to be President of the United States. As much as I despise Barack Obama, I would much rather have a Democrat populist in the White House rather than a Republican populist. We dont need a populist negatively distorting the perception of the effectiveness of Republican policies. For god sakes man, lets get a supply sider in there for crying out loud!!! Let's stop it with the Herbert Hoover Republicans and get some more Ronald Reagan and Calvin Coolidge Republicans for a change!!!

And you think Sarah Palin would not get trounced in the general election? LOL At least Huckabee can be considered intelligent. Palin is a complete dummy...most of the intellectuals in the GOP feel as such. She definitely has appeal with poor whites and the intellectually challenged.
Good luck!

The genius obama said that wealthy people by and large are "lucky" to be rich.  Im sorry, but that has to be one of the dumbest statements I have ever heard.

Obama is not smart, he just lies very well.  On economics, the man is perhaps the dumbest and most ill-informed president of my lifetime.

Ok Genius, tell he how the economy is going to benefit by adding massive new taxes, govt. agencies, regulations, and costs on productive people and production?

How does taxing small businsss 8% of payroll benefit unemployment?

How does taxing peoples' energy use and driving up the cost of energy help the economy?

Serious Benny, rather than you usual dick sucking of ZERO, why dont you explain what Obama himself cannot?

Come on Benny:

since Obama cant explain how his policies will help the economy, why dont you tr in your own words.

1.  8% payroll tax on small business
2.  Cap & Trade energy taxes
3.  New govt agencies and regulations
4.  New taxes on production and productive people?
5.  Ending the Bush tax cuts resulting in top marginal rates of over 50%

What Obama is doing to this country is horrible.  He fooled many in the general election into thinking he may be a moderate...bullshit, he is almost as left and as progressive as it gets....and he's an efficient salesman, so his agenda is getting pushed through by blitzing on multiple fronts at one time and overwhelming the public...while stiffling criticizm from the media and an honest discussion based on fact.  We must balance the government in 2010.

The republicans need to use Palin for her strengths but should NOT promote her as a candidate for 2012.  They need to pick someone who is a powerhouse on the economy and is a true fiscal conservative.  Economic issues will win in 2012, not social issues.
