ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Former boxing champion Vernon Forrest is dead after being shot multiple times in a neighborhood southwest of downtown Atlanta, officials said Sunday.

Police say they have no suspects in the death of former boxing champion Vernon Forrest.

An Atlanta police spokeswoman said it appeared that Forrest, 38, had been robbed, which led to a confrontation in which he was shot several times in the back.

Mark Guilbeau, senior investigator with the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office in Atlanta, said an autopsy will be conducted Sunday, and results are expected by afternoon.

Forrest was the International Boxing Federation welterweight champion in 2001, the World Boxing Council welterweight champion in 2002-2003, and the WBC light welterweight champion in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009, according to the BoxRec Web site.

He was named the World Boxing Hall of Fame fighter of the year in 2002, according to BoxRec.

At first there was thought that Arguello was suicide, now there are suspicions that hit men forced him to shoot himself in the heart.

Fckin tough ass world we live in.

2 of the above boxers were murdered, and a good chance Arguello was also.

any addtional details. all i've heard is a confrontation after a robbery. was he robbed in the hood and went back at the dude? i've seen that happen. was robbed with bling, etc? did he refuse to give up material stuff and was shot upon turning around? was he aware of this cat? one of the homeboys on the sw side? more details?

He was airing up the tires in his Jaguar, I think a couple guys tried to jack his car and Vernon Forrest went after them with a gun he was carrying; ended up getting shot 7 or 8 times.

He was a great fighter years ago. If I remember correctly he fairly easily beat a prime Shane Mosley twice.

it's good to have a gun to defend youself - in georgia everybody carries - but you can't chase dudes, if that is what happened.

I lived about ten minutes from where that shit went down. Atlanta is a dangerous city if you're black and have money. Luckily I'm neither.

I disagree dude was a multi millionaire 2 time boxing champion.He was known by millions of people that = celebrity...there are however different levels of celebrity I'll give you that.He wasn't an A list everyone knows him celeb.but still a celeb none the less.
