Government Suspends 'Clunkers' Program
NYC Car Dealers: How Could Obama Administration Mess This Up?
Lou Young NEW YORK (CBS) /b]

Drivers were dumping their old cars in exchange for up to $4,500, as part of the federal Cash for Clunkers program.

"Cash for Clunkers" came to a screeching halt Thursday, after only six days on the road.

In a shocker, the government announced it would suspend the program at midnight because demand was too great.

It may have been the best $1 billion the government has spent so far this year.

Business was humming at Crestmont Toyota/Volkswagen Thursday night as salespeople rushed back to work on news that the government's "Cash for Clunkers" program was being suspended.

It's the deal where you get up to $4,500 for your older low mileage beast if you buy a new car with more efficient fuel consumption.

On Thursday night we learned the program was only good until midnight, all because of a backlog of red tape. So the salespeople were trying to get their deals through the government's Web site.

"People are loving it. It's wonderful. It's a great stimulus package," salesman Andy Beloff said.

But when asked if the government was running the program well, Beloff said, "No. No."

The dealership's lot had roughly 40 clunkers waiting to be shipped to the junkyard. Each one has already been replaced by a brand new lower mileage car. The program only started last Friday. It's a victim of its own success.

But the money may be running out faster than anyone imagined.

With almost 23,000 deals already processed and tens of thousands more in the pipeline, it's possible the $1 billion allocated for the program might have already run out and into the pockets of people like Christie Acosta, who knew a good deal when she saw one.

"I had a 1987 Ford Explorer. We had it for a while and I was ready to get rid of it," Acosta said.

For the economy it's good news, but the government's miscalculation has some a little nervous.

"These are just the deals we have to submit tonight," Crestmont president Bill Strauss said while holding a stack of papers. He said the dealership has over $100,000 on the table.

"If they can't administer a program like this, I'd be a little concerned about my health insurance," car salesman Rob Bojaryn said.

The "Clunkers" program was being administered by the National Highway Safety Administration, which has seemed overwhelmed from the get-go. Some in Congress are expected to push for expansion of the $1 billion budget on Friday.

If you have a "Clunkers" deal in the works, don't worry. The government said Thursday any transactions already made between dealers and consumers will be honored.

This has to be the dumbest program I have ever heard of.

1.  Why is the govt encouraging people to go deeper in debt?

2.  This program is forcing me to subsidize my neighbors' going into debt to buy a car.

3.  The govt is creating a false demand by giving tax dollars to people to turn in otherwise good vehicles.  Once this phoney rebate goes away, so will the demand.

4.  Why is the govt encouraging the destruction of decent vehicles that could be available to poor people who look for used cars?

5.  if the govt cant deal with a program this small, how is it going to deal with health care.

I wonder if someone was smart enough to buy a Pinto off Craigslist for $300 and then run down to get their $4500 worth of trade in.

I think it has to be registered in your name for at least a year.

Actually, you laugh, but cant you see the fraud in this?

Dealers can scrap out all the parts and sell to a used parts dealer and still get the certificate from the junk yard.

Also, a person could scapr out the parts and tow the thing over there and sell all the parts himself to a used parts dealer.

This whole thing is so ripe for fraud.

I dont want my tax dollars subsidizing this nonsense.  Its crazy to junk good cars so people can go more into debt.  Plus, even though the buyer gets 4500, half of that is going to sales tax in many states.

I think the intentions were good.

People who really needed a car would have a reason to purchase a new one that was more fuel efficient rather than saving money by buying used less "green" vehicles.

This is turn would help stimulate the auto sales biz.

Most people in debt are not going to try to run up more.  At least most logical people.  And those that are in debt and not logical probably have no credit right now anyway.

But as with anything out there, you will find some people try to rape the system and get as much out of it as they can no matter what.  The potential for fraud is there.  Just like anything.

Lurker:

Check this book out.  Seriously, its not political or anything like that.  It clears up a ton of stuff on economics.  We need to encourage savings and production, nort conspution based on debt.

The simplest way to put it is that what is good economics for the average household is no different than what is good economics for the country.

hahaha horrible concept, but I wish I would have cashed in.  $4500 cash for a $500 bucket in your driveway.

I like the idea of pulling poor emissions cars off the road, but not a that cost.  Ripe for fraud.

Not at all, this is utter nonsense.

Why should myself your yourself partly finance someone elses purchase of a car and go deeper into debt?

Additionally, why should the govt encourage people junking good cars that can be sold to people who need decent cheap transportation?

240 with his typical dumbass answer to everything Obama does wrong. Do you have the same shit already written and just copy and paste it into your postings?

Here's an idea- before starting a PROGRAM why not make sure that it can be implemented effectively. Yes 240, I would rather not waste the publics time, the taxpayers time or squander the countries resources to rush programs that dont work. Not having an inept program is a zero sum game. We lose nothing and the government wastes nothing. Having stupid programs that cant be managed or initiated effectively HURTS the country because it wastes time and money and resources.

When the stimulus plan is a massive failure ( which it is showing to be right now) and everyone is pissed off, will your excuse for Obama and the democrats not reading the stimulus package be something like this? " Would you rather have spent one trillion dollars stupidly and without reading the legislation, or would you rather have not done anything?"

I'm not defending this program.  Sounds half-assed and like they majorly under-estimated how many ppl would rather have 4500 than their bucket of crap car.

i defend some obama crap, but i dont defend this one.
