Franken Approval Rating Worst Among New Senators
Wednesday, August 19, 2009 2:10 PM

Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., is not topping the hit parade with his relatively new constituents, according to the most recent poll.

Two weeks into the former "Saturday Night Live" comedian’s tenure in the Senate, SurveyUSA asked 600 Minnesotans whether they approved/disapproved of his work thus far. The poll found 43 percent of adults approved of his job performance and 45 percent disapproved. Registering an “unsure” was 12 percent.

Meanwhile, the state’s senior senator, Democrat Amy Klobuchar, captured a 54 percent approval rating, with 42 percent disapproving.

Bottom line: Franken received only 42 percent of the vote last fall — nearly identical to the percentage of those now approving of his job performance.

Only Virginia Democratic Sen. Jim Webb captured a lower net approval rating in his first month in office than Franken, according to Smart Politics. It reached that conclusion by looking at polling results compiled by SurveyUSA, which tracked nine senators who have assumed office since January 2007.

What’s worse is that the relatively low approval numbers appear to be part of a general downward trend.

Some weeks before Election Day, unfavorable numbers for Franken rose to 53 percent in a December Rasmussen poll, with that number increasing to an all-time high of 55 percent in mid-May, according to Smart Politics.

That time period was in the midst of Sen. Norm Coleman's lawsuit in his quest to retain his seat. Despite all the furor, Minnesotans believed by a 4-to-1 margin that Franken eventually would emerge as the winner of the contest.

What's shocking here? I don't see the big deal with those numbers are?  The race played out way different, comparing him to what others get by default seems odd.

He hasn't done anything so while I think he's a douche, I can give him a chance. Webb worked on the GI Bill and is a Dem in name only anyway.

Well when you are making your debut as a Senator from Minnesota representing many many people, and on the first day you use your very scarce allotted time to ask a Supreme Court nominee about Perry Mason, people shouldnt approve.

jesus christ

2 weeks into his job and they're asking people in Minnesota if they approve/dissaprove of his "work"

what percentage can even say what his "work" has been in those two weeks?

who gets evaluated 2 weeks into a job?

the best question would be why are you posting this shit?

you live in Hawaii

you should be posting pictures of topless chicks on the beach

Seems too early to evaluate, that said, its ridiculous he is in the senate in the first place.

He'll probably be voted out in 2010.  The circumstances of last election probably got him through.  People wanted change so they mainly voted democrat.  But instead of reasonable moderate democrats, they put way too many left wing democrats in.  As 240 said, the pendulum swings...and it will swing back to some degree in 2010, as it should.

Coleman headed to Harvard

From CNN's Lauren Pratapas

(CNN) — Former Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman has a new gig — at successor Al Franken's alma mater.

Harvard University's Institute of Politics announced Thursday that the former Republican senator will be part of its latest class of teaching fellows.

Other political luminaries joining Coleman at Harvard as resident or visiting fellows this fall include former Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe, former Kerry and Obama advisor Stephanie Cutter, Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan.
