CNN Poll: Obama Has Lost Independents

President Obama’s slippage in popularity continues.

A majority of independent voters, 53 percent, now disapprove of Obama’s job performance, according to a poll from CNN/Opinion Research Corp. conducted last week.

That marks the first time a CNN poll has shown a majority of independents turning against the president. Only 43 percent of independents now approve of Obama’s performance.

Obama's overall approval rating dropped 3 points from July and 8 points from June, to 53 percent. The amount of those disapproving rose 5 points from July and 8 points from June, to 45 percent.

To be sure, the president did gain support among Democrats, to 90 percent, up 3 points from July. Only 15 percent of Republicans approve, down 8 points from July.

Obama’s loss of support among independents may make it quite difficult for him to achieve his agenda, including healthcare reform.

"Obama won a majority of the vote among independents last year, and that helped put him in the White House," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Losing their support makes it more difficult for Obama to govern from the center."

As for specific issues, Obama’s rating on healthcare plunged 13 points since March. His rating on the deficit plummeted 16 points, his rating on taxes slipped 17 point points and his rating on the war in Afghanistan skidded 18 points since March.

A CBS News poll conducted last week showed Obama with a 56 percent approval rating, down 2 points from July. That level, of course, is 3 points higher than the CNN poll.

A Real Clear Politics poll shows that Obama’s approval rating is about equal to President George W. Bush’s at the same point in their term – 51.8 percent for Obama and 52 percent for Bush

I think Obama is about to have the dam break on the left flank if he throws the base under the bus.

First quarter is halfway over.  I think we can safely say the game is won.  pat yourselves on the back, guys.  Have a drink.  Obama might be shrewd enough to convince the nation to elect him despite any experience over far better qualified choices in mccain and clinton.

But there's no way he's smart enough to get all the lib shit out of the way now, then return to centrist policies while at the same time danging constant reminders of the sins of the Bush administration.

No way he's that smart.  Nice work, boys.  We won in the 1st quarter.  Have a beer and celebrate.

240 - here is the problem:

He has not delivered on anything for his base as of yet and has not built up enough good will to throw them under the bus.

GWB at least gave the right alito, tax cuts, Roberts, etc, so many of the base put up with his garbage on illegal aliens, CFR, NCLB, etc.

Obama has no credibility yet even with his base.

his base ain't going anywhere.  Repubs aren'r gonna run a moderate in 2012, you know that.  They tried in 2008 and got mopped.

They'll run a jindal or palin or other person whose views support 60% of the R base and 30% of mainstream america.

Gee, I wonder who lib voters will chose.  Maybe they'll pick a fundamentalist over obama because he only got 75% of what they wanted.  MMMkay...

I think u ignore whats going on. Do u read a major newspaper at all...do u even understand whats going. Barry has lost the people that got him elected. He can't stay in Afghanistan and hold the far left, and the moderate leftists are all he can safely hold onto. This won't be about the Republicans in 2012, it will be all about Barry. Pack ur shit asshat.
