Frank Zane - a leader at the time!
« on: September 11, 2009, 08:10:45 AM »
FRANK ZANE late 60's to mid seventies was more bulked lean i guess that was the look at the time even in contest shape,to me he was the leader at the time later as redefining contest hardness and shape, but my question is when or what yr? did he change his look and how did he or who advised him for this transformation.btw he was one of and still one of my faves.

I get his quarterly newsletter/magazine.

He has a story in one with pics where he competed in his second to last or last Olympia at 205 pounds.

Probably the first show where he came in ripped was at the 1968 IFBB Mr. Universe where he beat Arnold, who outweighed him by over 60 pounds. After that he usually peaked well. He was very lean at the the 74 Olympia, came in smooth at the 75 Olympia (which is why you don't see much of him in Pumping Iron.) In 76, he comes in super shredded but a bit light and got beat by Franco who was at his all time biggest. Then in 77, Zane came in a bit bigger, but not quite as cut as the previous year and wins, 1978 he's more cut than 79 but not as big..still wins. In 1979, he hits his all time peak coming in bigger than before and very ripped and full and beats Mike Mentzer for the overall. I was at all those 3 Olympias (1977-1979). In 80, has the pool accident a few months out and comes in shredded but smaller..loses. In 1982, like Lax says, comes in at close to 200 pounds, looks good, not quite as cut, but loses to Dickerson....(I would have gone with Zane or Samir) In 1983, injures shoulder falling off his bicycle, so is down in size but very ripped. Samir wins. Zane retires. Did I miss anything, Lax?

No Chem, you are an astute student of history. I did think, however, that at his final Olympia he was over 200...his biggest. I could be wrong.

I agree...never saw how Dickerson won, although he is to be respected. Most don't know that Dickerson's mother was the first black, female lawyer in Alaska.

I laugh how Arnold disdainfully states that "Zane bruised his balls or something..." when addressing the sour grapes at his questionable 80 O win.

In fact, Zane punctured his urethra when sitting on a pool chair which collapsed on him.

He nearly bled to death.

Actually, it was in 1982, in England where Zane was about 200 pounds..the year Dickerson won. His last contest was in 1983, which is where the Ironman cover pic is from, he weighed closer to 190 in that one . The other pic is from 82 . Looks good in both.

Great shots Funk, Zane had a Excellent Proportionate Physique in his prime years in the Late 1970s, IMO when in his best shape he had fewer weak points than those who went head to head with him in the late 1970s, balanced, defined, posing, presentation etc he was very thorough in how he approached BB back then.

I think either twins or triplets...yes.

The imperious Arnold was a real jagoff to nearly everyone involved in that show...couldn't beat 'em (legitimately) with his physique, so he ran his sarcastically curled lip.

I love the story chem tells of how arnold kicked him out of a backstage area because chems dad would not invest with him-when prior to this arnold embraced chem. Am I right on this, Chem?

i'm not here to bash zane...his physique is about as perfect as you can get..but can we assumed he used ''some'' AAS?
