What is Water loading?

In the recent Jeff Rodriguez vid he mentioned drinking 5 gallons of water during the day to "water load"

What is the effect of this?

What is he trying to achieve by doing this?

he just does that so on game day his water intake dosent have to be drastically low
If he starts at 5 he can lose all the water by drinking 1 gallon near showtime

Instead if drinking 2 gallons a week out and almost near  the show

i think you meant "waterboarding".
