The point of going to a nice restaurant is to enjoy the finest of food/drinks and to get a nice experience, not to impress someone.

Think about it: The mundane day to day activities = usually forgotten. You remember the times in your life when you did something out of the ordinary, so enjoying what you like to enjoy (culinary experiences, skydiving, shooting guns, whatever) and doing it well is worth the cost once in a while.

We dated a few times and I eventually bought her a really expensive dinner thinking this was the night we went back to her place (I was living with mom  :-X  )..

The bitch was greedy..but I thought it was going to be worth it..
