Five up for Games inclusion

Golf, rugby union and bodybuilding have been included in a shortlist of five sports being considered for the 2012 Olympics.

09/28/2009

Karate and roller sports complete the list, while softball, baseball and modern pentathlon could be excluded.

"We have sent a questionnaire to the 28 Summer federations represented in the Olympic Games," an IOC spokesman said.

"It is all part of an ongoing review of the programme. As part of this process the IOC has decided to include five sports not currently in the Games."

IOC president Jacques Rogge has said that no sport can be included without another dropping out.

"We'll decide (about new entries) in 2005. Golf, rugby, bodybuilding and roller skating are knocking on the door," Rogge told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

"But for every novelty, we will need to give up a discipline. Nothing can be added. The golden numbers are 300 events, 28 sports, 10,400 athletes at most."

Golf and rugby union have been part of the Games before, while bodybuilding, karate and roller sports are still awaiting their debut.

International Federation of BodyBuilders president Dr Rafael Santonja said: "We have fought for 20 years to achieve our dream of being on the Olympic programme.

"Every top bodybuilder would rank an Olympic medal as the greatest prize in the sport. This review by the IOC is wonderful news for bodybuilding."

Argentina scrum-half Augustin Pichot is among those campaigning on behalf of rugby union, which was an Olympic sport in 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924.

"For me playing in the Olympic Games would be the highest achievement as a rugby player," he says.

This is retarded. Bodybuilding is the only “sport” that requires boat loads of drugs just to compete professionally. Playing marbles is healthier than bodybuilding at the pro level.

They'll consider it, then politely drop it. No-one wants to be connected to such a  small drug addled "sport" now. By supporting pro bb, it would be a tacit approvel of steroid use. It's a wonder they even keep Olympic Lifting with many of the major lifters dropped out of the 2008 games because of drug use.

They are testing reasonably hard now, half the bbing squad would be pulled before they even reach the stage:).

I say rugby and karate have a decent chance though.

Would be cool but I don't see it working due to drugs being such a big part in bb

What you are missing is:

A) While other Olympic sports have drug problems, they are already long established Olympic histories.

B) They bring money and large amounts of interest to the games.

C) They atleast acknowledge, put on a show and try to fix their drug problems. They don't parade it around in a thong for all to see.

It is not final yet … however if it goes through … it means that the federations + the national Olympic committees will spend much more on the sport … which will develop the level of the sport

With this kind of publicities governments will be very much interesting in spending and paying the bbers more to achieve the ultimate goal in sports … an Olympic Medal

it also means that bodybuilding will be exposed for the joke of a "sport" that it is... drug abusers posing on a stage.

A.we got to start from somewhere.

B.Bodybuilding industry surviving on its own without so called interest of general public.Olympic recognition will open a new door for bodybuilders to reach out to general public.remember all dipshit like you get involved with weight training either by watching bodybuilding magazine or contest.

C.Acknowledge my ass.those are just political statements u heard from the heads of various sports organizations.

Anything can happen.  At the Olympics, they will drug test, just like they do in any other sport.  Drugs are prevalent in every sport - such is life.

As for small or big sports, I think they just removed BASEBALL and SOFTBALL from the next Olympics...

well if it happened it would be great imo.

would give some of the naturals some recognition for their hard work. And we would really see who is the best naturals with real year around testing!

bodybuilding is subjective.. there is no athletic requirement to judge.. so they will drop the idea.. they dont like controversy and every decision would be controversy x 2..  the ifbb needs to stop this silly pursuit..
