I'm watching it and it appears that things are about to get pretty bad as they are looking to simplify the law to schedule supplements.

Before we know it they will start banning red meat, because of the iron and creatine contents are to high.  Next, caffeine and any other stimulant. After that, protein powders.

since most supplements you can get at your local health food store is snake oil, why would this be a bad thing?

Its too much power to give to one organization and a lot of legal and good supplements and herbs would be eliminated.  Those safeguards are in place to prevent such an action to take place.

Because no product should ever be required to prove efficacy.  People should be free to learn for themselves to stay away from scams and not foster an environment of government protection to do so.  Safety is another issue, but it's not the government's job to baby people.  At least not from my perspective ["libertarian capitalism"].

so advertisers should be able to say anything?   cigarette manufacturers should be allowed to say their product is healthy?  Cheerios should be allowed to say that eating their product will prevent heart attacks?

Many people "don't trust government".   I don't trust business.   Elected officials are suppose to report to their constituents, and they can be voted out of office.   Businesses report to their shareholders, and their shareholders want the best (and usually quickest) return on their investment, even if that means screwing over or even inflicting damage onto the consumer.

in all things there needs to be checks and balances.  with billion dollar industries, like the supplement industry, the only thing big enough to be a check and balance is the government.

the free market, if it were truly free, would handle everything quite well.

as I wrote in another thread,  the free market it not an intelligent being, has no memory.  its made up of individuals who come and go, individuals who never learned or don't remember mistakes that happened 20, 30, 70 years ago, individuals who make decisions and even game the system based on their personal short term gains.

the free market tries to make the most profit in the shortest period of time, even when it causes long term damage that will affect the next generation.
