Why do I get the feeling that what she's calling right wing is what we would call left wing? Not familiar enough with Canadian politics to know, but it just seems that way.
Possibly because you're not familiar with Canadian politics and / or parties.
What I call conservative, is what you would call conservative in the USA.
What I call liberal in Canada is equivalent to say a Bill Clinton administration.
What I call left wing in Canada is like that NJ senator (his name escapes me at the moment) on steroids.
We have 3 major parties.
Left Wing = New Democratic Party lead by Jack Layton (Mr Opportunist himself) aka "The stache"
Centre = The Liberal Party of Canada lead by Michael Ignatieff (Harvard Intellectual) and long time Obama friend
Right Wing = The Conservatives lead by Prime Minister Stephen Harper (Bush's fluffer, and beholden to oil interests)
In recent years, especially under the leadership of Paul Martin as finance minster under Liberal Prime Minister Jean Crétien, and later as as Liberal Prime Minister himself, Centrist politics in Canada has taken a marked shift to the right fiscally. Most Canaians were OK with that, as most "Liberals" in Canada, (myself included) are socially left, & fiscally right.
Conservative Prime Minister Harper (aka sweater boy) has long been seen as a GWB fluffer, for want of a better word. I don't think there is a better word. his policies don't appear to be Made in Canada solutions for Canadian challenges, but appear to be all about 'harmonizing' with the USA, despite the two countries facing different challenges. He's a puppet for oil money imo, ...and now it appears his strings are being pulled by Big Pharma as well.
Hope That Clarifies.
