If all unemployment benefits were ended tomorrow...
« on: October 09, 2009, 12:37:56 PM »
Would the unemployment rate drop?

Because I think we all probably know a person or three who is enjoying his/her 6 months of guaranteed paychecks to sit home and watch Tube8 all day, right?

If the free govt $ stopped coming, I'm betting a lot of them would be mowing lawns, washing cars, or going back to school - finding some way to better their situation.

The tears would be flowing. There have been economic studies that show unemployment benefits cause people to stop searching for jobs and where they usually end up waiting until they've been receiving benefits for a while before starting to look for another job.

Hell I had a neighbor a few years back that took the whole time for UE benefits, then went on disability (undiagnosable 'back pain') the day after they ended.

Walmart was hiring then, and he got pissed when I suggested he go apply. He was too good to work there....

Actually it would be zero.

Unemployment states only look at people receiving compensation.

That has been the total deception during this down turn because many people no longer seek employment, IE early retire, collect welfare.

The 9.8% stat should be much higher.

Yes, but they do adjustments so that the number is only looking at those people who are considered to still be in the workforce. If you are still unemployed after a year, then you obviously aren't looking and thus, shouldn't be included in the numbers.

If you are considering the UE number should include ALL people who are unemployed, the number would be somenthing like 40%.

I made five applications/resume submissions a week while on unemployment, documented for the state.  It still took me six months.

It isn't free money...much like social security it is your money that is drafted from your paycheck.  Get your facts right, unemployment is your money.  What many of you also fail to realize is that UE is based on your current pay, so if you are a civil engineer making good money you get roughly 55% of your pay(estimated).  While applying at Wal-mart or another business may get you a job, it means you are making less money.  What decision would you make?

Most people I know that are on UE simply cannot find work, it has nothing to do with them watching TV all day.  UE benefits barely cover your bills if they even do that.

You need to get YOUR facts right.  It's a State by State issue.  In my State, workers pay NO unemployment tax.  It was done away with many years ago and now the employer pays ALL the unemployment tax.

The people I know on unemployment hate it and are willing to get off as soon as possible, with one exception who feels he's "too good" for certain jobs.  But, by and large, I think most people want off as fast as possible.

Unemployment only gives you a fraction of your normal salary and, at least in Florida, you must show that you've been actively seeking a job, in order to keep getting your unemployment benefits.

I apologize.

It still doesn't change the fact that it is based on your current pay/salary.  Like you, the people that I know hate it, but realize that even if they take that Wal-mart job they will make even less money.

If you're unemployed you don't HAVE a normal salary.

And here in CA, you can stay on UE for the whole time and not ever look for a job. They ask every month, but there is no verification of penalty to lie or simple ignore it.
