Author Can't Verify Anti-Limbaugh Quotes, So Huffington Post Pulls Them Down
By: Rich Noyes

Early Thursday afternoon, the Weekly Standard’s John McCormack reported that the Huffington Post had asked author Jack Huberman to document quotes allegedly from Rush Limbaugh declaring that slavery “had its merits” and that the assassin of Martin Luther King, Jr. deserved the Medal of Honor.

The quotes were widely cited as real by several sports writers and on CNN and MSNBC in the past week as proof that Limbaugh was a racist who did not deserve to own part of the St. Louis Rams football team. But the Huffington Post has now removed them, saying the author has not been able to substantiate them.

This editor’s note appeared early Thursday evening on the 2006 blog by the liberal Huberman, who was pitching his then-new book, 101 People Who Are REALLY Screwing America:

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this post contained quotes attributed to Rush Limbaugh, which Limbaugh has since denied making. As is our policy when a fact in a blog post is called into question, we gave its author 24 hours to substantiate the quote. Since he has not been able to do so, the quotes have been deleted from the post.

CNN’s Rick Sanchez read the slavery quote during the 3pm hour of CNN’s Newsroom on October 12 as proof of Limbaugh’s “racist diatribes.” Wednesday night, CNN’s Anderson Cooper declared the slavery quote “false,” and “not something he [Limbaugh] ever said. Sanchez may have been planning his own retraction today, but live coverage of the runaway balloon in Colorado pre-empted his normal show.

[UPDATE: CNN's Rick Sanchez also, apologizes, sort of, via Twitter: "i've know rush. in person,i like him. his rhetoric, however is inexcusably divisive. he's right tho. we didn't confirm quote. our bad."]

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow cited the preposterous quote about giving King assassin James Earl Ray the Medal of Honor back in June; this week, multiple MSNBC anchors have referred to the pro-slavery quote as genuine. MSNBC Live anchor Tamron Hall, for example, on Monday afternoon asked, “Should a person who says there are merits with slavery be able to have this privilege of owning a team?” That was after Limbaugh had already said that he had never uttered such a phrase.

At this point I’ve heard of no effort to correct the record at MSNBC.

Great talking points from Jesse Lee Patterson...

Does The NFL View Conservative White Americans As Racists?
bondinfo.org
October 16, 2009

LOS ANGELES—Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, Founder and President of BOND, the Brotherhood Organization Of A New Destiny, issued the following statement about the scandalous and shameful way NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith treated Rush Limbaugh, effectively blocking his bid as part of a group to purchase the St. Louis Rams:

“As an American civil-rights leader I am deeply disturbed by the unfair treatment Rush Limbaugh received at the hands of the NFL and the smear campaign orchestrated by many in the media to brand him a ‘racist.’

“Rush Limbaugh was denied the opportunity to own a part of an NFL franchise because he’s a conservative straight white male and a staunch critic of Barack Obama’s agenda.

“If Mr. Goodell and the owners view Rush as too divisive, then what must they think about the millions of NFL fans who listen to Rush and hold NFL season tickets? If Rush is considered a ‘racist’ and can’t be an owner, does that mean his listeners are also racists who don’t deserve to sit in NFL stadiums? If the league and the players association are going to discriminate against Rush, why should conservatives put money into the NFL’s coffers and pay the exorbitant salaries of the players?

“The NFL commissioner and owners were pressured by the players association and black race hustlers Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to derail Rush’s chance of owning a part of the St. Louis Rams.

“When will white Americans stop caving in to shakedown artists like Jackson and Sharpton, whose claim to any moral authority whatsoever is a joke?

“This should be the wakeup call for white Americans to stop supporting organizations who don’t have the spine to say ‘no’ to hate mongers or stand up on behalf of the rights of every American to pursue liberty and happiness.”

When all those racist teabaggers stop watching or going to the games - those liberal do gooders in the NFL will see their revenuie dry up and be begging limbaugh to save the day.

I don't care for Limbaugh's tone or divisiveness either.  I don't listen to him because of his personality.  He intentionally makes inflammatory statements for attention.  However, the people making unsubstantiated claims of racism need to be held liable...legally.  It's slander and affected his ability to enter into a business deal.
We can not tolerate labeling someone racist without specific acts that serve as proof.  Being racist is a truly horrible thing, deplorable.  Rush hates liberals and is vocal about it, his personality is rough, like other talk show hosts.  Rush has given support for conservative minorities.  Rush has said some harsh things against particular black athletes and aspects of dysfunctional minority culture, but we can't extrapolate.  We must stop calling people racist in this country unless they truly deserve it.  The problem is that once the media picks up on it, they can't let it go because it sells and then most people think it's truth.  The media has a f'n primary responsibility to report fact and not unsubstantial sensationalism.

The group effort on the left to thwart Limbaugh's ability to make a business deal is completely unacceptible.  No one should be able to destroy another person like that...or destroy their personal freedom to make a financial or business decision.

I agree.  I've never been much of a Rush Limbaugh fan because of how he delivers his message.  But he's got the right to own a team if he has the means to do so.  And the media should be "Dan Rathered" like crazy for publishing false claims.

This is typical lib behavior. They love to attack others morals and attribute behaviors or comments to them, but they never see the image starring back at them in the mirror, nor do they ever look at the lib next to them. They scream Limbaugh is a racist, but embrace Jesse Jackson. They mock Rushs' drug use but praise a junkie like Patrick Kennedy.
