Brothers shoot intruders, killing 1
Pine Hills men came home to find burglars
Susan Jacobson

Sentinel Staff Writer

12:05 AM EDT, October 15, 2009

Tired from a long day at work, brothers Anthony and Peter Julien arrived home Tuesday night to find a bedroom light on and two bicycles in front of their Pine Hills home.

Anthony Julien went inside through the garage, a 9mm gun in his hand. One intruder was in Julien's bedroom to the right. Another man was pointing a gun at him from the dining room on the left. Julien dropped to one knee, knowing it was the stranger or him.

"When I saw he had a gun in his hand, I bent down and, 'pow,' I shot him right here," Julien said.

Both brothers opened fire. One intruder was killed, and a second was wounded.

The Orange-Osceola State Attorney's Office will decide whether charges should be filed against Anthony Julien, 50, or his brother, Peter, 57. Under the state's Castle Doctrine, however, residents can legally use deadly force to protect themselves against intruders.

"I'm sorry about what happened, but I didn't want him to kill me," Peter Julien said.

On Wednesday night, the two brothers cleaned up blood from a bedroom rug and a dining-room carpet and accepted visits of support from friends at their house in the 6700 block of Rubens Court.

One neighbor told Anthony Julien that her home had been burglarized, too. But he said the area, near Hiawassee and Clarcona-Ocoee roads, is normally safe and quiet.

The brothers, owners of an ice-cream truck, had been at work for more than 12 hours and made a quick stop at Walmart on the way home Tuesday. Soft-spoken, no-nonsense men from the Caribbean island of Grenada, they didn't hesitate when they discovered the strangers.

"I could have called 911, and in two days they let him go and they do it again," Anthony Julien said. "We shot them first and then called 911."

Orange County deputies identified Brandon Martinez, 17, as the gunman who was shot dead. Jonathan Rodriguez, 25, was found in a nearby driveway with a gunshot wound and was recovering Wednesday night at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Investigators are trying to sort out what happened to a third burglar whom Peter Julien also reported seeing.

A day after the shooting, the Juliens tried to put their home back together. A large rectangle of bloodstained dark-green carpet had to be removed from the dining room, where an old portrait of Anthony Julien, his former wife and their son hangs on the wall. A bloodstained mattress and box spring sat at the curb waiting for the garbage truck.

The trespassers broke a rear window. They pulled out drawers and dumped the contents. They tried to open a closet safe. They sorted through papers and envelopes, jewelry and coins. They upended bedding and tossed around clothes. Investigators found watches belonging to the brothers on at least one of the men who were shot, Peter Julien said. Some gold chains are missing, he said.

"The whole place was torn apart," Anthony Julien said as he surveyed the mess.

Tuesday's shooting was the third this month in which Central Florida-area residents have shot men who investigators say tried to victimize them.

On Oct. 4, a Daytona Beach man shot and killed Armando Navarro, 24, an armed intruder who broke into a home on Jean Street. Detectives determined the shooting was justified.

On Sunday, Oct. 11, Johnny Preston, a Lakeland tradesman, shot and wounded one of two men who tried to rob him at gunpoint in his front yard. The Polk County Sheriff's Office is investigating the circumstances.

reminds me of a few years back... my brother and i stayed in a trailer in the middle of a bad area.  one of my dad's properties at the time.  we stayed for free.

we'd have crackheads knocking on the door, running thru yards, etc. I can't count the times we would sweep the yard with a glock in each hand, the 2 of us.

Props to these guys for wasting the scumbag.

Yep, thumbs up.  There should be no "considering filing charges by the state attorney's office".  We must side with the victims of a crime.  Send a clear message to criminals...you don't terrorize innocent people.

If the two brothers had been smart, they would have only wounded both of the guys and then forced them to phone their scum bag friends to come help them.

Then shot the other scumbags when they arrived too.

my brother shot a guy who tried to rob his pharmacy.  Took 22 months to get his gun back.  They publicly said for weeks that they hadn't decided if they were filing charges.  But they had video of the two guys running in with masks on, guns in hand, as well as my brother firing on the man pointing the gun at him, and opting not to fire on the other guy with back to him as he fled.  Ya don't get much more cut and dry than that.

Yeah, that's cut and dry 240, hats off to your brother.  The castle law should apply in any owned dwelling (work or residence).  F these criminals that choose to terrorize law abiding citizens.

they all carried in the pharmacy, but when the bad guys came in, everyone else hit the floor or ran.  bad guy's plan was to kill them all in the back room, take the $ (it was friday the 3rd, big money day) and a whole pallet of oxycodone that had just come in.  Inside job= girl working called in, and it was her brother and friend robbing the place.

The weird twist... the lead detective would have actually taken ownership of the evidence in the case - my brother's very sweet glock 30, 45 caliber with modifications, if the case went 24 months and the evidnence unclaimed.  From 20 to 22 months, we called every day and the cop wouldn't take the call.  We think he wanted to keep that glock, or keep it out of my brother's hands.

I should get him to post here.  He has tattoos "RKBA" and "Patriot".  tatos of a glock, AR-15, the patriot guy, etc etc.  Lots of cool shit.  Still, he is a very responsible gun owner- was totally legal and even showed restraint on not shooting that punk ass in the back.

That's called PREMEDITATED MURDER...you want life in jail???

These two brothers may end up doing time themselves because they went into a house that was clearly being burglarized instead of calling the police FIRST? The scenario changes between you being home and the burgalar breaking in and entrapping, forcing you to use deadly force as opposed to you DELIBERATELY walking into a dangerous situation and using lethal force on someone. This wil play out in court.... these two brother may not like the outcome...

yeah, admitting that much to cops wasn't a bright idea.  better to just say you walked in, saw a gun, and did what you had to do to protect yourself.  Burst into tears and refer them to your lawyer for anything further.

there's always some anti-gun crybaby prick DA who will mourn the loss of life of the d-bags in this house pointing guns at the residents.

Brandon Martinez, Jonathan Rodriguez, Armando Navarro?  Looks like criminals from Latin countries who immigrated to the US thinking that they would just break into homes and get away with it like they might have done in their native country.

But they are finding out the hard way that too many American civilians carry and use guns too.

Just my CWP...my concealed weapon permit.  As of right now I carry a full size Springfield XD40.  Right now I'm saving up to get a S&W M&P9c.  I love that gun...can't wait to get it.

We don't have to get permits to purchase weapons down here.  Just show up, get your instant background check and walk out of the store with your gun in your hands.

NY is so screwed up.

We have to buy the gun first and then apply for the license.

Once you get the license, which takes 6-9 months at least, you then have to amend your permit every time you add a gun to your permit.

So say you get a gun and a license, then you have to buy another gun, and resbumt all your paperwork to get an amended permit.  That takes another two months at least.

I myself carry a G26.  My GF has a Lady S/W but she doesnt carry.

By the way, the dealer has to hold your gun while all this is going on.

I have a Beretta 92B 9mm, a Colt .38 Det. Special, S&W .22 Semi Auto, Beretta. 22, Walter PPK & TPH, G17 & G26, Remi 870 12 Guage, Saiga 12, Ar15, Ak47, Remington 700 .308 Rifle, Ruger 10/22, Marlin Papoose survival rifle, and a GSG5 Rifle.

I think I have enough!

The only gun I have looked at lately was a Springfield Armory SOCOM .308.
