Only problem with this thread......ain't nobody actually squatting anymore. This a world of upper bodybuilders that occassionally hit the leg extension machine or do high-speed, pogo stick raises on the calf machine. We should stop referring to it as the "squat rack" and start calling it by its proper name: the "shrug rack".

One other thing you might try is supports, Hise shrugs(place weighted bar across back and shrug), and walk outs. They helps to build confidence for dealing with heavy weights alone.

3) Learn to front squat big. Great for quad development, and you can dump it easy as pie.

4) Trap bar deadlifts off of a platform. This is a decent sub for squats.

5) Play with foot and trunk position for back squating. Certain positions are easier to dump than others.

If you have time, try to watch a few videos of Olympic lifters losing back squats, etc.... They are probably the best teachers of how to safely ditch a lift.

If your purpose is building quads, better having a spotter.
A spotter enable you to do it to the failure.
Plus he stabilizes your posture which prevent the injury.

When i've got a heavy load across my shoulders, it makes me feel warm inside to have a big strong man behind me ready to grab me. (no homo)

But in all seriousness i've always done the majority of my squatting without a spotter, up to 185kg. That was in a squat rack with no safety bars. The fear that if you fail you're fucked keeps

The gym got a new one with nice solid safety bars, but sadly i've become a pussy and it's a long time since i got anywhere near squatting 4 plates.
