Algae fuel - a road to energy independence?
« on: October 23, 2009, 07:14:04 AM »
I saw a TV show the other day that discussed the research that's currently being done to produce bio diesel from algaes.

Apparently you can use pretty much any type of water when growing algaes. Salt water, even dirty water from the sewers.

You grow them in huge bassins, and these bassins can be put in remote areas in deserts.

Unlike with corn and other bio diesel alternatives, you don't have to use food sources, or potential irrigation areas to grow these algaes.

It seems to be a few years before it can be materialized however.

But regardless. It seems like USA may be able to provide fuel for themselves.

If it should materialize that algaes could become the next big thing - should the Algae company be nationalized, similar to Norwegian oil companies?

Norway has a nationalized oil company and the profits are put into retirement funds.
