Yea, and its what gyms and clients look for. They go on the internet and do research before hiring a personal trainer. They don't just look at anyone in shape or a piece of eye candy.
If you don't have the proper certifications or diplomas then you're going to have a hard time convincing people that you are competent to train them or they are simply going to ignore you. I've been doing this for many years so I know the ups and downs of the business
