Loco or McWay,
« on: November 04, 2009, 07:34:12 PM »
I have this friend who is a Johovah witness (recently former) and she says according to the bible there is no such thing as hell.

Is that true?

I suppose i could look it up, but i don't know anyone who has more immediate knowledge of the bible than the two of you and I'm thinking you two could get right to the exact verses.

The concept of hell, according to what I've read and my upbringing is that it is a punishment that awaits all who reject Christ, upon His second coming.

That is the purpose of the "lake of fire" (Rev. 19 and 20). The controversy, surrounding Hell, is with regards to the concept that it currently exists NOW and wicked people's souls go there immediately upon death, to burn indefinitely.

In my particular denomination, we do not hold to the concept of an "everlasting fire", in that sense. Our belief is that the wicked will be destroyed thoroughly, completely, and permanently. The effects will be "everlasting", meaning that once sin is destroyed, it will be destroyed once and for all.

I hope I've answered your question sufficiently.

OzmO, I know you didn't ask me but the way I see it is that the bible indicates there is hell hell (The Lake of Fire - the final hell) but also a place for unbelievers to go when they die to await the final hell which is referred to as sheol/hades/etc.

Does your JW friend believe that unbelievers cease to exist (spirit and soul) when they die?  What does he say about the 144,000?  It's not biblical, but I think I've heard JW's believe that only that many go to heaven?  Not sure though.

Oh, and here are some scriptures on hell

(Lake of Fire)
Rev 19:20:10-15
And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
The Dead Are Judged
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Matthew 25:41
Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

(Sheol)
Luke 16:22-31
"The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'

"But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'

"He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'

"Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'

" 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'

"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' "

Though I'm familiar with and respect McWay's denomination's definition of Hell, my belief on Hell is more inline with STella's belief, though I don't like it because I can't wish that on anybody.  I was going to post some Bible verses, but STella beat me to it.    :)

Thanks MCWAY

We get some literature from them sometimes and much of it focuses on the Sabbath.

I wasn't aware of the view on hell.  I posted something from a guy a long time ago here that presented a case that hell wasn't eternal but would end after a time.  I will look for it..

Thanks.  So its never directly identified in the Bible?  In other words its never referred in ways such as:

-  You will go to hell
-  Hell is a place you don't want to go
-  Satan rules hell

And the concept of hell is derived from references to the "Lake of fire"?

Sorry Stella that I didn't think of you, as you are surely as knowledgeable as loco and McWay on the Bible.  It's just that I've gone round and round with them so much with hundreds of posts, anytime i think wanting to ask a question and want to get a "experts"  answer from a true believer those 2 pop in my head first.  But you are every bit as insightful and informative and thanks for answering my question.

I'm not sure what my friend believes.  She's 20, very strong minded and is in effect sowing her oats, rebelling from her church's teachings, not wanting to commit her life to the JW way yet, but says that when she decides to come back to she'll do it as a JW because they follow the bible literally.  I'll ask her when i get back from Canada.

So is Hades "hell" and the lake of fire something different?

Quote
death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them,

And what is "death" that it gets thrown into the fire?

Quote
Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.

So then hell burns in the lake of fire?

Quote
Luke 16:22-31
"The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'

So they burn in the hell after death and then after the book of life is opened then they burn in the lake of fire and well as hell which also burns in the lake of fire in addition to burning all those in it until the book of life is opened?

Thanks again Stella for taking the time to answer.   :)  This is interesting.

I learn a lot from MCWAY and loco!

So is Hades "hell" and the lake of fire something different?

From what I can see, yes....hades is the place of the unbelieving dead where they are waiting for their judgement to eventually be thrown into the lake of fire.   Both are a "separation from God," thus both are "hell."

And what is "death" that it gets thrown into the fire?

I think it's death...as in when people's bodies die.  After death is thrown into the lake of fire, there will be no more death.

So then hell burns in the lake of fire?

They get thrown in there so I assume they burn?  Maybe they burn up?

So they burn in the hell after death and then after the book of life is opened then they burn in the lake of fire and well as hell which also burns in the lake of fire in addition to burning all those in it until the book of life is opened?

What?  lol

It looks to go like this:

Unbeliever dies...goes to hell (hades).

AFter the millenium (the 1000 years after Christ returns in the air and is victorius at the battle of Armeggedon) and after Satan etc is thrown into the lake of fire, the Book of LIfe is opened and anyone whose name isn't in there (unbelievers) is thrown into the lake of fire (final hell) at that time.

"According to the bible" is a wrong term. In reality the bible contradicts itself around every corner. Depending on which book of the bible you read, Hell is real and there is an afterlife or hell isn't real and there is no afterlife. What "hell" is also varies depending on which book or passage you read in the bible.

According to the Bible:    ;D

Sheol:  The "realm of death."  Sheol is found in the Old Testament and it is the Hebrew word for a place where all souls, both righteous and the unrighteous, go when they are separated from their body to await the resurrection and the final judgment.

Psalm 16:10 (New American Standard Bible)
For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.

Hades: The "realm of death." Hades is simply the Greek word for Sheol and it is found in the New Testament.  So the two, Sheol and Hades, are one and the same.

Sheol or Hades is divided into two sides, one is a paradise for the souls of the righteous, while the other is a place of torment for the souls of the unrighteous.  The two sides are separated and no soul can cross over from one side to the other.  Some people confuse these two sides of Hades for heaven and hell.

Luke 16:26 (New International Version)
And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'

All souls in Hades await the day when they will be resurrected, judged and transferred from Hades to Heaven if righteous, or The Lake of Fire(Hell) if unrighteous.

Jesus Christ's soul went to Hades right after his crucifixion.  The soul of the criminal crucified next to him who believed in him went to the "paradise" side of Hades, while the soul of the other criminal who was crucified with Jesus and mocked him went to the other side of Hades where the unrighteous are tormented.

Luke 23:43
Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

Some Christians believe that after Jesus was crucified and before he rose again, Jesus released the righteous souls from Hades and sent them to Heaven.  And from then on, the souls of the saved who die go straight to Heaven.

The Abyss: The place where certain fallen angels(demons) are imprisoned by God and no longer allowed to roam the earth with the Devil and other demons.  The Devil will temporarily be thrown in there too one day.

Luke 8:31
"Legion," he replied, because many demons had gone into him. And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.

Revelation 20:1
And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years.

The Lake of Fire(Hell):  A place of eternal punishment prepared for the Devil and his angels, though the souls of the unrighteous will be taken from Sheol or Hades to the presence of God, judged, then thrown into the lake of fire too in the end.

Revelation 20:12-15 (New International Version)
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The Devil does not rule Hell, nobody does.  Hell is a place of punishment and torment, not a kingdom to be ruled.  The Devil is not in Hell right now, but according to the Bible he will be one day and while there the Devil will be punished and tormented, not ruling on a throne.

Revelation 20:10
And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

In my opinion, some of these things are symbolic and can't be taken literally, like "fire", "sulfur", death being thrown into a lake of fire, as if death was a person or an object to be consumed by fire.  These are symbols used to describe things that are not of this world and impossible for us to comprehend otherwise.  I do believe based on these scriptures that Hell is a place of punishment and Heaven a paradise and that there is no in-between, no other option.

Having said that, God does not want any soul to go to Hell, and neither do I:

2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

If you don't want to debate me on what is or what isn't in the Bible, then don't come here making baseless claims providing no evidence to support them.

What's the point anyway?  I was simply trying to answer OzmO's question the best I can.

The claims aren't baseless, I just have better things to do. I'll post the passages then you'll spend an hour trying to explain why I'm all wrong in my interpretation of them, then I'll refute your baloney and then you'll spend an hour saying the same exact thing in different words, I'll refute your baloney again, etc., etc., etc. So I'm ending it right now. If you were someone else, who I didn't have experience debating and didn't know your mind numbing bull headed methods, then I'd be more than happy to continue. But you ain't.

Thanks Loco,

So the bible seems never to reference "hell" as "hell" but rather "the lake of fire"?

BTW.  I was in Toronto this weekend and saw the "Dead Sea Scrolls"  exhibit.  Very cool stuff.

What, you are a prophet too?  You won't post them because they aren't there.  Yours was a baseless claim which you are unable to substantiate.  The burden of proof is on you.

You are welcome OzmO!

The word "Hell" comes from the Latin word "inferno" which means fire or intense heat, as in the lake of fire.  Hell in Español is "infierno."  So it is a valid word to use for Lake of Fire.  Some translations use "Hell" in place of Hades to refer to the side of Hades where the souls of the unrighteous are tormented.

The Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit?  Cool!  I hope I get to see something like that some day!

I don't know if you live by or in a big city but i would imagine at some point the exhibit might travel there because it was only in Toronto for a limited time.

Thanks OzmO!  I would like to visit Jerusalem some day.  Maybe I'll catch it there.   :)
