Quote :
Commercial spots for CBS’s Saturday Night Fights broadcast of Strikeforce/M-1 Global “Fedor vs. Rogers” have completely sold out, according to Kelly Kahl, executive vice president for primetime programming for the network.

“I’d say this was probably a quicker sellout than the EliteXC shows,” said Kahl, who added that the addition of top-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko has piqued interest in “premium advertisers” from the auto, movies, and video gaming genres.

Aside from ratings, advertising sales are a second way that networks can gauge interest in its programming. Kahl said that other sporting events on CBS usually complete their advertising sales a day or two before air date if that.

Among those scheduled around the live broadcast, EA Sports will unveil a preview of its MMA game due out in 2010.

Kahl would not suggest the ratings’ range CBS hopes to draw for Saturday’s show -- its first live MMA event since EliteXC “Heat” in October 2008. However, Kahl said any movement in the young male demographics, particularly Male 18-49 and 18-34, will be coveted. CBS averages a .7 rating in that demo on Saturdays, its lowpoint of the week, said Kahl.

EliteXC “Heat” drew a 2.5 rating in the Male 18-34 and 18-49 brackets a year ago, when Seth Petruzelli knocked out Kimbo Slice in 14 seconds during the main event. The three live MMA events that CBS broadcasted in 2008 ranged between an average 2.6 and 4.8 million viewers.

A crowd of more than 10,000 spectators could greet two of the world’s top 10 heavyweights when Fedor Emelianenko meets Brett Rogers in the Strikeforce/M-1 Global “Fedor vs. Rogers” main event this Saturday at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

According to Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, who received the figures from Ticketmaster, 9,815 tickets have been sold for the promotion’s debut on CBS, which will also feature a five-round middleweight title fight between Jake Shields and Jason "Mayhem" Miller. That leaves only 871 tickets unsold for the show. By comparison, UFC 90, which featured a middleweight title bout between Anderson Silva and Patrick Cote, drew 15,359 at the Allstate Arena in nearby Rosemont, Ill., in October 2008.

A Chicago Sun-Times feature story on the stoic Emelianenko, whose stateside marketability has long been questioned, resulted in a surge of interest, according to organizers. The 33-year-old Russian has not tasted defeat in nearly nine years.

Unbeaten in his last 27 fights, Emelianenko leveled former UFC champions Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia in his two most recent outings. He knocked out Arlovski with one punch 3:14 into their match at Affliction “Day of Reckoning” in January but has not competed since. Emelianenko agreed to a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce in August, spurning an offer from the rival UFC.

Difficult to stomach on his feet and on the ground, Emelianenko has finished his last five opponents inside one round and holds notable victories against Brazilian legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, 2006 Pride open weight grand prix winner Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and former UFC heavyweight champions Mark Coleman and Kevin Randleman. He has secured 23 of his 30 career wins by knockout, technical knockout or submission.

Rogers meanwhile, launched himself into the national spotlight when he dismantled Arlovski in 22 seconds at a Strikeforce show in June. The 28-year-old Minnesotan has finished all 10 of his opponents and represents a formidable physical challenge for Emelianenko, who has been often criticized for his choice of opposition. Rogers, a 6-foot-5, 265-pound EliteXC veteran, will own a significant height and weight advantage when the two meet inside the cage.

In addition, Strikeforce received 150 media requests for the event, more than double the volume the promotion typically experiences, according to CBS representatives.

CHICAGO -- A quartet of heavyweights are very much in the mix for a title shot at Strikeforce and M-1 Global’s “Fedor vs. Rogers” this Saturday at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

The world’s top-ranked heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko, is the strong favorite against undefeated Brett Rogers, while recent signees Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Silva will vie for a place in the division’s still evolving pecking order. Both are three-round, non-title bouts.

And if Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem can’t return to defend his turf in early 2010, the winners of Saturday’s fights could meet in a title elimination bout during that time.

“You see the matchup potential between the winner of the Silva-Werdum fight and the winner of the Fedor vs. Rogers fight, so I think it would make sense for those two to fight each other depending on how it goes,” said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker.

Coker seemed assured that Overeem, who won the title from Paul Buentello in November 2007 but has never defended it, will be back in the fold in the first quarter of 2010.

However, Overeem has cancelled two attempts the promotion made this year to pair him up with Fabricio Werdum because of a hand injury. In the interim, Overeem entered this year’s K-1 tournament in September and advanced to its finals on Dec. 5 in Japan. The lanky Dutchman also squeezed in two additional MMA bouts, one in his homeland in October and the other a week later for Dream in Japan, during that time.

With Overeem’s future commitments still undetermined, Saturday’s heavyweight doubleheader has palpable ramifications.

Emelianenko, who turned down a multi-fight deal with the UFC in August to join Strikeforce’s ranks, said he plans to stick around to find out what happens next.

“I know for sure that I will have two more fights next year in the U.S.A. and then we’ll see how the contract will work,” said Emelianenko through his translator. “Maybe we’ll sign another contract.

The stoic Russian said being the heavy favorite hasn’t altered his mindset or preparation for the bout.

“I never try to think about how impressive I am,” said Emelianenko. “I just come to ring. I come to the ring to show my techniques and show my skills. I want definitely to finish it as fast as possible.”

Emelianenko’s would-be unsurper, Rogers, might have the most to gain with what would be classified as a huge upset victory if he prevails Saturday.

“I’m kinda in that ball right now where I’m about to explode,” said Rogers. “This is my first time… where I can just go out and fight and I’m ready to go.”

In the other bracket, the heavy-handed Silva, making his return to the U.S. following a one-year steroids suspension, has an equally career-changing challenge in Werdum, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt once in the UFC title hunt.

“He has very strong points and weaknesses,” said Silva through his manager, Alex Davis. “I’ve been training very hard in jiu-jitsu and standup with my coach, just came off a fight in Japan four months ago and have been training ever since. I’ve come to do or die.”

Likewise to the other three vying for Strikeforce’s heavyweight top spot, Werdum simply stated that his goal is to secure a bout with Emelianenko or Rogers next.

I can't wait to see this fight.  How great is it that it's for free?  I think Fedor is past his prime even at his young age.  Fighters have so much wear and tear on their body.  I think if this goes big in the ratings he will be in a perfect position for Strike Force and the UFC to make a super fight between Brock and Fedor.

Realize any heavyweight has a puncher's chance, but why is this big nobody getting Fedor so soon? Strikeforce must be slim pickins.
