Money, sponsors put up the money for the show correct? No money no show.

The promoter, in this case, John Balik, owns Ironman Magazine. His investment would have been the Sanction Fee, and any other related overhead to the show production (i.E.- Securing Venue, promotional materials, etc)

The sponsors are mostly the supplement companies, who pay a fee to the promoter for space/ ad copy for the show...

Some of these are non refundable...

If they really only had approx. 200 paying ticket holders last year, then it's pretty understandable why Balik would choose to forgo the show...

You just dont seem to get it, do you?  YOU'RE the one talking out of your ass, as you have NOTHING to do with the industry...

And yes, when the numbers DONT add up, any smart promoter will pick up their ball and go home....what other factors are there to consider when assessing the success/ failure of a show?

As for bodybuilding doing better than ever...what proof do you have that its not?

New shows have replaced others that werent viable, Jr. Nats, USA, Nationals all have record numbers this year...Olympia had it's biggest attendance in hstory/ expo was huge.

feel free to spout your insight

I have Nothing to do with the industry? You have no idea who I am, so this statement is incredibly presumptuous, on your part. I suppose suppling gear to Pros/Amateurs in Venice, somehow doesn't qualify for me being in the loop?  ???

You don't want to open up too many cans of worms, so keep it civil.

You keep threatening you'll open up some can of worms....LOL....go right ahead. You obviously have me confused with someone who has stuff to hide.

I have kept it civil....now try answering the question I asked.

That's right. The third biggest pro show in the country and a Poison tribute band outsells them 6:1 that same night. The only way to save the "sport" is to admit it is primarily a venue for homosexuality and endorse that...if it looks gay, sounds gay, and involves oiled men in thongs, it is gay. Pro bodybuilding needs to come out of the closet already.

Yet, oddly enough, anytime BB shows have been held in "gay" areas....they were sparcly attended and folded after the first year.

The only one that needs to come out of the closet....is you.

240 is predicting SOMEONE will come fwd and rescue this baby.  ironman is a mainstay in this sport.  Who will be the hero, the force to say they'll help out the show?

Then the obvious answer is to institute a mandatory gay4pay round in the judging criteria.

The Ironman was a mainstay, but like any pro show other than the Arnold or Olympia, it was sparsely attended every year.  The show was not promoted very well and changed venues too often to "settle in".  Add to that the fact that the top bodybuilders don't enter these smaller shows anymore, and it is not that surprising.

This is a sad day.. the IRONMan show is prestigous and can perhaps claim the #3 most popular show following the Olympia and Arnold weekend. Sure it might be replaced by some new shows, but most new shows have poor attendance and start from the bottom of the pack. Seeing the IRONMan go is quite sad. With all the $5-$10k in sanction fees the IFBB pockets for each show, why not give SOME back and give a helping hand financially to allow shows like the IRONMan to run for another year before the promoters can get their act together for the following year?

The #3 show is now easily the NY Pro.. which is turning into the great show it once was under the NOC name. The rest all light years behind.

such as?     Harrisburg and Denver aren't 'gay' areas.

the problem with the Ironman was they didn't advertise it locally.   I saw plenty of ads for the Fit Expo, but you had to look hard to see the Ironman mentioned in small print.   The MMA stuff was prominently displayed.

It was a mistake to move the Ironman to a corner of the LA Convention center.  The demographics of these expos is not the same as the demographics of bodybuilding contests.

The California Pro Figure is held at the Culver City Auditorium.  The Border States Pro Figure is held at a banquet hall that can hold 650 people.   The Sacramento Pro Figure is held at an old theater that can seat 975 people.   They seem to be doing fine.

Hold the Ironman at Redondo, Culver City, or even at the El Ray Theater near WeHo, and then ADVERTISE LOCALLY, and people will attend.

I agree with you Tim, but I am curious, wasn't the San Fran Pro, a complete flop?

Then again, I remember one story from WAyne Demilla, where he got a great turnout, to the Night of Champions, because he put a bunch of ads in some of the local Gay publications.

For Immediate Release

(November 13, 2009 – Oxnard, California) Iron Man Magazine Publisher John Balik reported today that the Pro Fight Supplements Iron Man Pro bodybuilding contest, originally slated to take place on Saturday, January 23, 2010, is being rescheduled for an as of yet undetermined date. The contest, which celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2009, is one of the longest running IFBB Pro shows in the world.

For the last six years, the Iron Man Pro has been held in conjunction with The Bodybuilding.com Los Angeles Fitness Expo, produced by National Fitness Productions. With over 20,000 attendees, 250 exhibitors, and an incredible line-up of fitness, physique, martial arts and strength contests, it is one of the country’s largest and fastest growing consumer fitness expos.

“The Expo has been a huge success and is growing every year” said Balik. “But when it was held in late February, two weeks before the Arnold Classic to accommodate the Iron Man Pro, some companies just couldn’t exhibit at it. Shipping their booths coast-to-coast and asking their staff to work back-to-back expos was just too much for some of them.”

So when National Fitness Productions elected to move the Expo to the third weekend in January last year, dozens more companies were able to come out from the Midwest and East Coast to exhibit. However, as Balik noted, “for the pro bodybuilders, it meant having to train and diet through the holiday season and then try to peak again six weeks later for the Arnold and other IFBB contests that follow it.”

“And in spite of the huge crowds that attend the Expo and the myriad of sponsors that support it, ticket sales to the Iron Man Pro continue to decline, making it a challenge to produce the contest profitably.”

Balik added, "The quality of the athletes is the cornerstone of any events success. The rich twenty year history of the Iron Man Pro is the direct result of the wonderful IFBB athletes who have supported it. From the first winner, Shawn Ray, to the 20th, Silvio Samuel, and the current Mr. Olympia, Jay Cutler, the list of champions is a who's who of IFBB Pro Bodybuilding."

Balik went on to say he is investigating alternative dates and venues at which to hold the Iron Man Pro, either in late February just prior to the Arnold Classic, or perhaps in May around the time of the New York Pro Show.

Moving the Contest to either of these time slots would mean the bodybuilders could gear their training and dieting for multiple shows on back-to-back weekends, giving them chances for multiple paydays and Mr. Olympia qualifying finishes. In turn, the deeper line-ups will hopefully draw more fans to the contests which would be good for the promoters, the sponsors and the sport.

every other promoter should hire the IRONMan light crew. the best photos of most pro's were taken over the years at the IRONMan. better than a week or two later at the Arnold where they actually peaked.  the only show that compared for lighting was one grand prix in Europe in 99

x2 - the lighting was always good for that show. Not sure if it was a combination of the venue and the lighting combined or just the lighting technology itself.
