White House: IL prison eyed for Guantanamo inmates
« on: November 14, 2009, 07:10:53 PM »

The Obama administration may buy a near-empty prison in rural northwestern Illinois to house detainees from Guantanamo Bay along with federal inmates, a White House official said Saturday.

The maximum-security Thomson Correctional Facility, about 150 miles west of Chicago, was one of several evaluated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and emerged as a leading option to house the detainees, the official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because a decision has not been made.

President Barack Obama wants detainees from the controversial military-run detention center in Cuba to be transferred to U.S. soil so they can be prosecuted for their suspected crimes.

It is unclear how many Guantanamo detainees — alleged terrorism suspects, many held without charges since the beginning of the war in Afghanistan — might be transferred to Illinois or when. Obama initially planned to close the Guantanamo Bay prison by Jan. 22, but the administration is no longer expected to meet that deadline.

Great ::) Not only has the US spent how many millions to build and maintain the Gitmo prison, now they want to spend more money on yet another prison and put these assclowns on the US soil. The pure stupidity of the this administration is astounding.

This is a collosal mess.

There is nothing wrong with Gitmo.  Gitmo was just another excuse to bash Bush.

I agree this is a mess - but Gitmo was used by jihadists as a recruiting tool - many in the military were against it because of the backlash felt on the battlefield.

Far better to announce we're setting them free... then unfortunately the boat sinks on the ride home :P

What was the recruiting tool during the 90's that led up to 9/11 240?

Bases in saudi arabia.  You know this.

I'm only repeating what numerous soldiers said over the years.  Al-Q numbers surged following announcement of Gitmo and Abu ghirab mess.  You dont want to give those 10-year old fencesetters a reason to walk 200 miles to blow themselves up.

The fucking terrorist lived better at Gitmo than they did in their home country, the only reason it could be used as a recruiting tool is because of the dumbass media that has depicted it as some medieval torture chamber.

But you are right they should be taking a dirt nap right now, in any other war these guy would have been executed in short order.

And groups like the ACLU and Code Pinko fanned those flames and you know that too.

Then what about the 80's and 70's....... there is always some reason the fucking muslims are pissed off about something and start killing, thats what they do. The fuckers can't even get along with each other, is the US wasn't there the Suni's and Shia would be trying to kill each other.

of course the media and coke pink did their part.

But dubya was the brash one saying "we have them here, no trial biches!"

He could have kept them locked up in egypt or anywhere else, and the world would have never heard of them.  Hell, gitmo could have been a big building, end of news story.

Instead, he made them live in cages OUTDOORS to punk them.  It was a bad idea.

And if you disagree, ask Dubya himself - He said all along he wanted the place to close.  then again, they were prob cheney's idea?

"Bush reminded the audience that he had also remarked during his presidency that he thought the detention facility should eventually close"
