Great Zen question. The species on earth are always striving for a goal which causes pain due to no permanance here everything is temporary, hence if you beat ego no more striving = pain is always asscoiated with ego.

You cant defeat your ego.

Because "you" are already ego.So to speak, a ego defeat another ego.
Thats why the ilumination happens when they give up the quest totaly saying " now I know! Its impossible defenitely! Defeating ego is impossosible!! I think the ilumination is impossible!".
So,he accept everything and fusion everything. There, there is no ideal thing and no need to do the quest anymore. Totaly free from everthing.
But, to be like that, you have to keep on your quest until you realize that its impossible. Thats called Buring Karma.
