That's all well and good but look at what Islam was doing in the 1500s. The Ottoman Empire was one of the most oppressive regimes this planet has ever seen. The only difference is that the Christian world has, for the most part, moved on and matured while Islam hasn't changed a single bit and may have gotten even worse.

I never understood this referencing the events of centuries ago. Every religion was horrible, oppressive and violent then. Not just the Christians.

absolutely nothing wrong with referencing the past, it should absolutely be done.  If you're going back to that time, Christianity did as much killing and was responsible for as much and I'm sure more oppression than any other religion, but yea, you're right, Christianity has reformed in many ways, Islam, right now, looks like it never will as I'm sure Christianity looked like in those early times.  The needed step is for these people to remove church from state and that fact should be a reminder for us also because sometimes it looks like we're on a path of forgetting, or at least there are many who would like it so.

Sam time, many of the Aztec, Mayan, and Incan civilizations were destroyed in the quest for Gold and souls. And in fact, Mayan Codices were destroyed, these were written records of Mayan Civilization. Imagine what we could know, if they Spanish didn't have them destroyed. This is the same civilization that had such a precise calendar that they predicted that the end of a epoch would occur in 2012 (no the world will not end.)  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_codices

Atheism killed more people than all religions combined.  Between Mao, Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, etc, they far eclipse anything Christianity ever did.
