Islamic countries lobby UN for censorship rules.
« on: November 19, 2009, 07:41:18 PM »
GENEVA – Four years after cartoons of the prophet Muhammad set off violent protests across the Muslim world, Islamic nations are mounting a campaign for an international treaty to protect religious symbols and beliefs from mockery — essentially a ban on blasphemy that would put them on a collision course with free speech laws in the West.

Documents obtained by The Associated Press show that Algeria and Pakistan have taken the lead in lobbying to eventually bring the proposal to a vote in the U.N. General Assembly.

If ratified in countries that enshrine freedom of expression as a fundamental right, such a treaty would require them to limit free speech if it risks seriously offending religious believers. The process, though, will take years and no showdown is imminent.

They can go fuck themselves. But given that the UN loves kissing Muslim ass, I expect this to get some serious thought. Absolutely revolting.

The UN is the most pathetic organization on the planet. It's become little more than a soap box for dictators and fundamentalist nutjobs to spew their idiotic rhetoric.

The less $ we give to the UN and the less of a leadership role we have, the better.  Obama loves the UN and has proposed (or actually carried out) increasing U.S. funding to the U.N.  Obama seems to have the interests of the world before the interests of the U.S.  At very least, you can make that argument.

The rest of the world should step up the money they contribute before we do. Enough of us leading the charge on everything while getting badmouthed at every meeting by whichever psychopathic dictator gets the podium. Time for the rest of the world to pull some of the slack. Europe and China can start contributing anytime they feel like it.

The U.N. has proven to be worthless outside of relief efforts for international disasters.  The recent U.N. conference that allowed dictators the platform to speak was ludicrous.

China won't, because they don't care. And if they want to be #1, then they are gonna have to change their stance on a lot of things, a complete 180, and not just say it, but show it in their own country

The Chinese are very smart (typically)...they know the U.N. is mostly an ineffective waste of money.
Agreed they have a poor track record with human rights.  I think the U.N.'s only purpose would be to promote human rights and assist in international tragedies.  The chinese probably laugh at the $ the U.S. wastes and many of our recent poor economic decisions....and that we are financed by them.

The Chinese are smart ecnomically.  I have done some business with Chinese businesses in NYC.  I am very impressed with their way of doing business from what I have seen.

They are not suicidal like we are.  This is why they told Obama to fuck off on climate change.  Feeding people is more important than esoteric goals that never come about in the name of eco-friendly policies.
